On-air and online: making people laugh, making people think, pissing people off

Craig Kilborn kicks it old skool on SportsCenter

Man, what a concept.  As I write this, ESPN is in the first batch of commercials after debuting its week-long engagement of bringing back former SportsCenter anchors, with one of my all-time favorites, Craig Kilborn.  The guy who talked smack about Bristol, Connecticut when he hosted "The Daily Show" pre-Jon Stewart (Bristol by the way is about 25 minutes from Waterbury, where I used to live) didn't miss a beat, and even did some of his classic comedy, intentionally surpressing and then finally revelling in the self-indulgent mannerisms which he was both applauded and scolded for.

This is an amazing concept for TV.  Craig proved he's still the man, calling entertaining highlights in what's traditionally the most boring time of year for national sports (August, with only baseball, who's appeal is fleeting at best).  I saw from the promo that ESPN alums Gayle Gardner, Greg Gumbel and others are returning to the desk.  Sadly, I won't hold me breath on such a repeat performance of my favorite anchor in any genre, Keith Olbermann.

KO, by many accounts, arguably burned too many bridges with management and may or may not have been asked to participate.  Bummer - he's one of the best, as he and Dan Patrick WERE SportsCenter in the early 90's.

Anyway, Kilborn's return was dignified and funny, and well-deserved.  That I can call him "colleague" (me being a sportscaster myself) is extremely self-aggrandizing on my part, but not completely inaccurate.

Awesome job, Craig!

Just a comment...at the end of the show, Craig closed the show with a "Get well soon, Keith, I'm proud of ya!" Doesn't take a genius to deduce that Keith Olbermann making a hurried, albeit non-scheduled appearance would be appreciated by a helluva lot of people.

Me included.

Yeah, caught the "Get well Keith" line at the end. The funniest bits were flashbacks of goofy Charley Steiner giggling like a schoolgirl. Apparently, the persons on the other end of the earpieces just knew how to crack Charley up, and once he started, he couldn't stop. :P<br>

Trust me...I can attest that on certain occasions when producers or co-anchors feel giddy...they'll do anything to make you laugh on live TV. I once was reading sports highlights when a co-anchor paraded into the studio and posed like David in front of the camera with his "naughty bits" adhered to his thigh with duct tape. That was a hard highlight to read through and keep a straight face.

Half of me wanted to crack up, the other half was in shock.
