Java is getting worried

Looks like .NET's progress and adoption is starting to worry Java, truthfully if I was banking my future I would start to worry. While I think Java will always be around in some sense, I don't see alot of new stuff coming from Sun, and I see a ton of stuff coming from Microsoft. I would also worry because I see from the guys at Microsoft that they want it all, they will not be happy with 50%, and Java is in the way.

James: Java is used on a very large scale for server side applications. It has very mature application servers to program against. They are 1, 2 years ahead of .NET at the moment. Don't forget, .NET is just out of Early adopter phase. Java shouldn't be worried, the only people who should worry are Sun employees, but not because of Java.

The more interesting thing is not that java is ahead, it obviously is a head, but that they went from being 6 or 7 years ahead to being 1 or 2 in just a couple of years. Its not going to be something that changes anytime soon(its really quite possible that a dark horse will show up), but I think java's days are numbered as it stands today.

What will make the game so much more fun to watch is that Sun certainly isn't going to stand still and will show up with answers to any upper hands .NET has, as will Microsoft to any Java has. We could actually finally have some real competition outside of database products for once.
I think the java innovation engine just needs to rev back up to get this thing going...they've been without serious competition for a qhile now.

Sure the number of new APIs coming out of Sun has slowed down over the last couple of years especially compared to the rate they were coming out 4 to 5 years ago. But that is because Java is mature now. Sun still is coming out with new stuff like Project Rave and BEA is doing the same. Java is anything but stagnant and is being used a lot for production applications.

You know who is really scared: VB. All the reports I have seen is that the use of VB has dropped off dramatically.
