Do websites need to be experienced exactly the same in every web browser?

Personally I think this is crucial. Web browser compatibility/support is  one of my top priorities when building/testing new web sites especially when interacting with the UI with JavaScript / JQuery / Ajax and CSS. UX(User Experience) should remain at most the same across browsers such as IE, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. One of the key fundamentals in web design/development is to be consistent in representing your site and functionality. Any big changes may disorientate your users, even if it scales down to browser compatibility, I would recommend testing sites with major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome.

Yes, especially with all the browser analytics available these days - you should really know what browsers your customers are using and then cater to that audience.  

Unfortunately we have often had to deal with IE6 just because corporate users of some applications are still using it.
