SQL Compare tools

Dealing with 10+ databases, terabytes of data, and enormous DTS packages on a daily basis, I couldn't live without a SQL database comparison tool. I was reading an article about Red Gate software's SQL tools suite which includes SQL Compare (database structures/schemas), SQL Data Compare (content/data), and DTS Compare (dts packages, logins, jobs, and version info). I've used AdeptSQL for a long time now, but it just doesn't cut it for everything...

All my peers swear by the SQL Compare, especially since we are "given" the data schema and cannot modify it in any way without much hassle. Our DBAs use it too.

For simple needs, this one may also be useful:

I have used all of the redgate tools for the past couple of years and I think they are great. My only caveat is that they can be a little slow on databases with a large number of tables, views, and stored procedures. They are invaluable when figuring out what to turn over from development into production.

I agree totally... my main reason for using the tools is moving from a dev to production environment. So far, I still prefer AdeptSQL over Red Gate... their DTS tool is very useful, but quite hard to read and go through it all. Some things, such as create date, etc... I don't really care about. I just want to know what's different in the package.

I compared SQLDBCompare and SQL Compare and found the SQLDBCompare is easier to use and more powerful than SQL Compare. You can get SQLDBCompare free at URL http://www.bestsofttool.com

There are 4 good tools about, RedGate's, SQL Delta, Adept and Apex. All these guys do it well (well for the most part) by directly interfacing with SQL Server and not using crappy ODBC api.

Why crappy odbc.. it doesn't show up low level items that many of us set when using EM or Query A.

Personally, I like the all in one tool b/c its handy to have. Check out SQL Delta for the cheapest or Apex (although its a bit clunky sometimes) as another all in one.

I've had good results with RedGate, but SQL Examiner (www.sqlaccessories.com/SQL_Examiner_Suite) turned out to be a lot more helpful when I ran up against problems.  Where RedGate just gave me a cryptic error message, Examiner allowed me to pick the right fix from a dropdown.
