Microsoft Vault?

There's been some recent speculation on win_tech_off_topic that Microsoft could be interested in Vault as a VSS replacement...  Interesting.  The thread also mentioned that Microsoft tried (and failed) to make their own VSS replacement.  I'd also heard about Microsoft's difficulties in replacing Source Safe, but it is interesting to see this story corroborated.

Actually, VSS is not that bad but it certainly needs some improvements (relative to its competition). More integration with VS.NET would be nice along with some consideration for Enterprise applications (scalability). SourceGear's VAULT would be an interesting replacement as it's built on .NET/SQL2K and perhaps a good fit, with rest of the MS platform tools & apps.

I can't comment on this post but I can point you to more information about the future of VSS: http://blogs.gotdotnet.com/korbyp/PermaLink.aspx/4d2d405c-1ab7-48b6-8bc0-708582b653e1
