First Pretty Silverlight Site Spotted

Via Tim Sneath:

"Celso Gomes is an amazing interactive designer working at Microsoft who is responsible for the beautiful sample applications that ship with Expression Blend and did some of the earliest design explorations for Silverlight.

Now he's come up with Nibbles: a series of "snack tutorials for hungry designers" that cover the use of Expression Blend to build WPF and Silverlight content. The site itself is a stunning example of Silverlight, with faded animations and transitions and accordion bars: it makes my own work seem feeble by comparison. Make sure you check it out - it's inspiring..." [1]

It is pretty cool. This is the first Silverlight based site I've seen that actually looks like a Flash site. Almost everything else I've seen has been a sample made by a developer, not a designer, if you catch my drift ;).

The biggest problem I see with Silverlight is that when I go to the site you mention, all I get is a "Get Silverlight" button.  Which is great, except for the fact that Silverlight isn't available for Win2k, nor does MS have plans for implementing Silverlight for Win2k (last time I checked.)

It seems kind of presumptious of the technology (and designer?) to decide that only people who have the most recent supported technology/approved browsers are going to get any access to the content.   And here I thought one of the main points of putting content on the web was supposed to be that it's accessible by anyone from anywhere.

Not to mention, what is Microsoft thinking by saying "Go ahead use this on your Mac, but because you've got an old version of our software, you're left out in the cold."?

Silverlight is never going to be a Flash-killer until it will work on any and every platform that Flash does.
