For MS to succeed with Silverlight it has to support the OS X platform in terms of developer tools and the .NET framework as vigorously as the Windows platform. But we know they won't (eg. IE for Mac, Messenger for Mac) . :( Sad, really, because I really like .NET.

I know that with Flex I can have the same app run the same way on Macs and PCs. Is this true of Silverlight as well? Specifically will Silverlight on the Mac run any code that Silverlight on the PC can run? What is the level of .NET Framework support on the Mac?

It's a cross-platform release. Yes, Microsoft are now writing software that works on other operating systems.

When I first read about Silverlight, I thought "this is the future".

Nice to read an article that agrees with my persective so strongly :)

I am certain that anyone who knows C# should be able to pick it up readily, not to mention the C++ guys-they eat programming languages for breakfast!

You mentioned a lack of good video training...I noticed that too, about six months ago. So, in my spare time, I have been working on video lectures to explain Cocoa-related topics that I intend to post on my site. If I can build up a decently large library, it should serve as a resource for .NET programmers who want to develop for the iPhone.

A library of good books on Cocoa does not exist currently, but I am sure that they will appear in time. The most obvious need is for something on databases, since they form the basis of so many applications. Fortunately, Marcus Zarra is reportedly working on one for Pragmatic, so that should go a long way in helping people to make the transition.

The world has been held back because of shortsightedness like yours. It's a shame because it's so hard to open your eyes and at the same time you seem to enjoy the pain. So look to the bright side: you have a much larger threshold for pain.

PS. Writing less code is better. Open a DOS window (might crash in > W98) and type this, bitch:

mov ax,a000

mov es,ax

mov ax,12

int 10

in al,40

mov ah,al

in al,40

add di,ax

stosb

in al,60

jnz <address of line AFTER: int 10 - if my elitism is close, it should be 100h+3+2+3+2 bytes>

Press key "2" or "3" to exit <again from memory>

Now try doing the same with your "thousands of lines of code badassedness".

How do you make your system reduntant without building everything yourself that you were trying to avoid building by using the services?

IMO, Amazon needs some local APIs or local instances you can install in the case of a failure... otherwise, you don't really gain much in terms of dev time, because you'll have to build a hell of a lot of infrastructure to handle the cases where their services are down.

It's like any other component in a distributed system, and I think the appropriate move is to plan for redundancy. If the server I'm renting dies, this isn't that different.
