This has happened to me too, same exact thing.i couldn't get in but friends I was chatting with could. I assumed it was some sort of maintenance related outage. They probably have to segment their users across machines so one chunk of users might be affected at a time. But that's a total guess.

The same thing dsnt happen if you send messages by an other client

It dsnt happen with zone alarm disabled too

I don't have Zone Alarm and it definitely happened for me.

If yes, try to disable it.
Have you tried to set the gmail account on your preferred client?

It also happens to me - some messages stubbornly refuse to get opened. Luckily, the solution is to MARK THE MESSAGE AS READ. Then things go right. The error is weird, however..

The "oops" message appears at random, during various un-related task being performed... opening mail, sending mail, attaching files etc... Sometimes it wont appear for days on end... go figure.

I get this error code when I use my laptop.  It works on other computers just fine.

Hi guys, i think it is because of low bandwidth problem, like mine, if my upload bandwidth is low, then i can not attach file to send email, something like time out from gmail mail server..my internet connection is quite weird, my download bandwidth is high but my upload is too slow, so everytime i send email with attachment even just some hundreds of kb, the problem will occur..When i try send with attachment about 2mb at office pc which have high upload bandwidth, there seems no problem at all..btw, anybody have this kind of problem because my home internet connection is via wireless device to my office outdoor accesspoint?

I am having 2 accounts in gmail. one of the account i can login perfectly, but the other gives this wierd error message.

Disable the accelerator..thats the one causing the problem. As soon as you disable it the message gets sent. Hope this helps

Disable google web accelerator, it works. Its not a low bandwidth issue. Im on a 100 mbps link and still get the error. Works after WebAccelerator is disabled. If you dont have WebAccelerator, check ur firewal settings

Seems this error 007 is not only a gmail isue.

I tried another email client and it wont send message with attatchment either.

No solution yet.

I use norton antivirus but disabling doesent help.

I sent the attatchment from another pc - no problem!

I guess Agent 007 is trying to spy on our emails.

check the size of the file u r attaching with the mail does not exceed 10 Mbs, if it does then it is the reason why gmail doesn't allow you to so and gives above mentioned error.  I went through the same situation but i figured out this, at least for my case.  try this and it should work. If required, split files in parts and then send multiple mails one after another.

For me this definately ended up being a size issue.  My initial mail, the one having all the problems, had several rtf documents that made the individual files each 6150kb.  Totaling about 23 MB of data.  When I changed them all to .doc files they reduced in size to around 160 kb at max, making the total attachment about 950 Kb.  Once the attachment was reduced to this size, I no longer got the "oops..007" error.

We have been having this same issue all day. I run web google accelerator and saw Jørgen's post about turning it off and the error being fixed, and as soon as I switched it off then went back to gmail to try sending the email (that had previously come up with the James Bond error code), and it worked!

So my advice is to disable web accelerator if you use it, just while checking email, because the benefits of Web Accelerator are fantastic.

SOLUTION....

GO TO THE MESSAGE IN "DRAFTS" AND MARK THE CHECK BOX NEXT TO THE EMAIL, THEN OPEN IT AND SEND.  WORKS FINE.  GMAIL IS JUST A BIT TEMPREMENTAL SOMETIMES.

I had same problem. And i think I have come to some conclusions.

The problem was, I had 100+ emails in my "INBOX". and hence it had some problme showing me the inbox.

What i did is a small tweak,

I searched the mail in inbox & put it in another lable & archieved it. So my inbox was cleared.

Then i opened my inbox and alas...its opened.

Try this out if possible.

I stopped Google Web Accelerator, now i can send mail in G-mail. Before I can't send mail even just plain text in G-mail, and can't login in Yahoo and Hotmail.

Yeah i just got error 007 and its really getting on my nerves, i ever rebooted the PC. i sent myself a test mail and it went fine, but when i try to attach a video it starts with that error 007.

It is definitely low bandwidth – because I can send mail without attachments and at the same time I am having trouble with my Outlook mail, which is not connected to my Gmail. It kind of has fits and starts when my internet speed is “struggling”.

the most annoying part of that error is it say try back in a few seconds. why doesn't it just say no files over 10 Megs

When I got this problem in IE, I opened fireFox and tried, I did not get that.

So switching browsers may be getaround for the problem

code 008 has definately nothing to do with size coz i was just sending a regular mail.

I think I found what it is.  It is the windows updater.  I had the firewall turned off and after I read all of this, I went and checked and the automatic Windows update turned it back on.  Try turning this off.

The cause is probably multiple.  I have huge bandwidth, do not have web accelerator, am not trying to attach a file, cannot save the file to draft (I get the same error message, and still get an error message.  I have had this problem randomly for over a year.  I am am about done with gmail. I guess Microsoft is not have the only idiot programmers out there.

I saw a note somewhere about the 007 code, which suggested using the https version of GMail.  As soon as I did that, my 008 error went away and I was able to send.

I thing that in my case the problem was some caching or corrupt information.

Woooow!!!!!!!            Ego is so right. I had the problem with no attachment, no firewalls or accelerator and on a fast office LAN (although our proxy server is a little difficult at times). I couldn’t figure out what was going on, then I saw Ego’s post and used the https service (which I didn’t even know existed) and hay presto it worked.

While Gmail does in deed rock the house, the 007 error is a bit generic and I don’t think it really gives any indication of what is wrong. Sadly the https service seems a little slower so if the problem your problem is related to large files this may not help you, but it’s worth a go.

I don't think all the reasons for this error are the same. i'm using my gmail on a job computer with heavy firewall, but the common ports for exploring are opened. so that wasn't the problem..the last time i got ridd of the problem was by deleting the senders text & pics from the replay message. although i wasn't sending any atachments in ordinary way, i accualy was, because of the pics that were sent to me...hope this helps..

I had the same problem and I went into Tools, Security and changed my setings to Medium/High which is the recommended default settings. Now everything is normal.

I think its because you were trying to attach something that was to big for gmail.com to upload

... I unplugged my router and router switch, and then after plugging it back in and allowing it reset, I was able to use gmail as a POP3 account again.

I get this error when I try to access gmail from my browser. Not trying to send anything. The roblem clearly occured when Microsoft Outlook got installed on my computer. Not solved yet.

I get 008, I recently installed adobe upgradre, and it started doing it right after that.  I don't know if that is related to the error. I am considering restoring back my puter to the date prior of the adobe download.  I should of know better, I hate all these upgrades...also tried the firewall deal, no luck, I am using about 26% of my gmail account.

Removed IE v.7 but still getting code 008 sporadically. Gmail Help Center says message means Gmail is temporarily unavailable. for those of you who said it's bandwith--- IT'S NOT - i am at a major university and in the IT department so connection speed not the problem..

to mark mail "read" not the solution cuz mine pops up 8-10x's just opening the gmail page, not the actual mail. I have to click ok, ok , ok , ok , ok and so on til i goes away----again i get it 8-10 x's

This error has to do with MS updates, go back and unstall the last round of MS updates and this error will go away. I had this error and I removed the MS November updates and now I have no problems.

I think this is yet another Microsoft conspiracy!!!

I was trying to send four .bmp files at once, which ranged from 11mb to 23mb.  I continued getting error 008, and then a random error 007 thrown in as well.  I opened up the first .bmp and saved it as a .jpg (3200kb versus 24mb) and it went through, but with a delay of maybe 10 seconds.  Then, I converted the other three .bmp files to .jpg (again, 11+mb down to 3200kb or so) and attached the remaining three, and again, maybe a 20-30 second delay, and they also were delivered to the recipient and got confirmations on both.

Due to the delay in the upload, I'm thinking Google may be having an issue with one of their attachment processing servers...I dunno, but I don't have a bandwidth problem, I don't have Google Accelerator, I left my Windows and Zone Alarm fire walls up, and my AVG running the entire time.  Oh, and I'm running IE 7.0 since three weeks ago and had not seen the 008 error until yesterday when trying to send attachments that were 11mb or larger.

I occasionality get 007 error when trying to send emails with attachments.  My pc does not have the google accelerator and it is on a very fast network lan as I am office based.  

I do liek gmail, just wish it was a bot more reliable, I read somewhere that there was some possible java conflict with Java runtime engines (JRE) that are installed ??

UPDATE WITH SOLUTION: I fixed the problem for me.  I now access gmail via the HTTPS site and it doesn't give me the 007 error.  The address is https://www.gmail.com.

I've been using gmail for over 12 months and this erroe code 008 has never happened until tonight when trying to send an attachment.  I've never had any problems sending large attachments before..... HELP!!!

Error 007 means:

You can´t attach a James Bond movie as a file to an e-mail.

Had the same general code 007 every time we went to send an email,without attachments! All the time noticing a clock running down on the left side of the screen with a message saying we are experiencing difficulties with chat. As soon as the clock finished running it started up again. So it was a never ending problem! To cut a long story short we now use the secure https address and so far no problems. Good luck. Why don't we hear something authoritative from GOOOGLE

Have been having problems with attachments and Firefox 1.5 for a while now.  This morning was completely unable to send a couple of 72kb PDF files.  It worked if I sent them through the gmail website directly, but had to hit send and wait a few minutes, hit send again, etc etc.

I did this for 5 seperate e-mail, took an hour of dorking around.  What a pain.

Only have the default Windows firewall running and plenty of bandwidth. Could it be, maybe I don't know, just maybe a gmail problem??? My wife and I both have gmail accounts and sometimes mine will do it and hers won't from the same machine (one in Firefox, one in IE), maybe all of the mindshare here could explain that? As an aside it doesn't matter which one is running IE and which one is running Firefox, problem persists.

It is amazing how everyone here assumes the problem is on their side of the internet. The problem is GMail. Their service has become too popular too fast. It's a "server busy" type problem. Nothing you do can avoid it. Except of course, use another web mail service. Maintaining a huge web mail service is not easy. Remember how many problems Hotmail had over the years before hordes of people left them and went to GMail? In fact, GMail's official explanation of the Error 007 code is that it means their service is "temporarily unavailable". But they are wrong when they say it will resolve itself in a few minutes. I am consistently having the problem. And it's really getting annoying.

Microsoft firewall was the problem for me but why it works sometimes and not others I have no idea.  I turn it off for firefox it is rubbish anyway time to buy a mac and solve all computer problems.

I followed the advice to disable Google Web Accelerator and now it works fine.  

Same error 008 sending *any* email from Gmail webinterace - on a brand new build of a Server2003.

My gmail has been working fine for months. now I can only send mail (with no attachment) if I connect my 'free' thomson modem to my adsl line & use the secure protocol?? If I connect my expensive Draytek ADSL modem/router, I cant send gmail at all. I am using Internet explorer on my xp pc's & Safari browser on my Mac -all behave the same. I believe problem is with my telephone line & my upload speed to ISP. I have a great download speed (6Mb) although it does vary a lot. However, my upload speed is constantly at 330Kb - never seems to vary -although when my webmail used to work, I was getting 1.4Mb upload rate - hence my conclusion. Is everyone using ADSL - are any cable users seeing same issue ?

I run Rootkit_Detective (Avert Stinger) on my pc and after searching I delete 3 keys. There were -blue- word on they names. After reboot adding attachments works properly. Sorry for my english.

I had error code 008 for ages and I tried EVERYTHING; I even bought a new laptop but that had the same thing happening.  Weird thing is that the rest of the Internet worked fine.  My IT friend and I finally tracked it down to my wireless router (D-Link).  I bought a new one (Netgear) and now all is working great.  My D-Link router was about 4 years old, so maybe that was the cause?  Anyway, router was the problem.

i'm getting the error code 767 as well but my friend is able to access his gmail. any idea what 767 signifies as far as maintenance or outages?

it's working now for me.

with this many people affected at once, it has to be a server maintainance issue. i've tried every suggestion i can find, but still no love from gmail. gmail, it's not me, it's you.

I'm just gonna chill & see if it lets me back in later. A clearing of cookies & cache + reboot did nothing & I'm using the latest version of Firefox.

i got error code 767 this morning and fixed the problem after cleaning cookie and cache in IE.

i agree it's server side issue. since i didn't do anything for IE on the other PC and found it also works fine now.

This solution below with MTU settings helps me to solve to my problems with Gmail (cant send and read messages).

MTU setting was my problem too - Original modem from TalkTalk (Thomson 330) was a problem..doesn't work properly on their ADSL2 setup (according to TT). They sent me a replacement modem (SmartAX MT882) & all of a sudden I can send any mails I want. I interrogated the modem & it turns out that the MTU setting in new modem is 1413...not 1432 as TT L2 support told me it should be.

I've now set my Draytek MTU to 1413 & I can now send receive ok with my wireless setup.

I've been getting the "Oops..." message with error code 008 ever since I installed EI7 (XP Pro SP2) when I try sending reasonably large attachments (eg pictures JPG ~ 4MB).  I download Firefox 2.0 and I was able to send the email without any difficulty.

 The https didn't work for me (certificate error) But, my oops 008 error was an upload bandwidth problem for sure.

  My wife was trying to send a gmail with 10 pics ~1 MB total...kept getting the 008. We share a router with a friend upstairs. I went and checked his rig and found Bitorrent was blasting .avi's out at my max DSL upload rate. I shut down the torrents, came back downstairs and sent the gmail no problem. (Could have saved my wife an hour of frustration if I'd known!)

  Check your upload bandwidth and you might solve your prob. Good luck,

I had the error code 008 while trying to send 5-6 files of about ~200kB . I closed BitComet and it worked ok...

Well, a pretty sleazy one, but it works:

I couldn’t send a file through gmail, so

i sent my self the same file through a different email address (yahoo)

and then forward it to my mailing list from gmail.

That put an end to 3 wasted hours.

Until someone from gmail wakes up and take care of that problem

I have NOT been able to send an email over the past 10 hours. The irritating message keeps popping up and surprisingly says, "Try again in a few seconds".

After doing a search, I am amazed that this problem has been around for a long time, but has not been resolved.

This problem has been occuring alot for the last 3 days.

I cannot log in for a wholday now. Get the oops 766 message first but now it is 767. I tried everything: cleaning cache, diable firewalls and so on, nothing helps. While I can log in with other account. https does not do the trick either. Is there a solution?

Same here 766, 767, blank screens with http, https, basic html mail, Gmail on the cell phone also broken. A friend's account works on my machine. I was very pleased with GMAIL but not any more.

I gave up and redirected my primary email address away from GMAIL to another address I have.

GMAIL came back up for about 2 minutes here, then began to fail again. I caught the up time when the notifier beeped. In the short time it was up it appears that many of my emails were likely lost. This is BAD!

I can log in now, but none of the messages I know should be there have arrived in my inbox. Sent a test message from another account to my gmail just now and it did not make it to my inbox either. Sending from gmail is not working either. Message gets lost in cyberspace - or my likely in an outgoing queue on gmail's servers.

Easy solution: I like gmail and wish to keep it as my primary address. After the recent gmail down time I decided to create a forwarding instruction for incoming email. I simply receive a copy of the email in my gmail inbox, and send another copy to a seldom used email address. Go to settings-accounts, then choose the option. It works fine!

did the trick.

FYI .. I had ZoneAlarm running as my firewall and did not have the Google Web Accelerator installed

Such type of problem comes due to low bandwith.  Dont upload or attached heavy size files.

Hi, I got the 007 message.

I found a way to solve it.

First, you log into your google account (not google mail).

Once you're in, you can choose to go to "mail" or "setting", choose "setting".

Once you're in, scroll down to bottom, click the "Basic HTML"

You'll be seeing your mail in basic html layout, delete some of the mails in your inbox.

Then try to click "Switch to Standard View" on top.

If this doesn't work, try go thru the same process and delete more mails before switching to Standard View.

I had the 008 problem uploading a large attachment with IE. Switched to Firefox, and it seems to have worked.

I just had this problem with the damn oops... thing.  It was 2 files, 9mb at most and IE wouldn't send it.  Poped open FireFox and wham, it sent.  IE suxxors

I had this problem too, tried the https logon, worked!

Looked like it had something to do with security certificates in windows firewall, ingored the warning, and voila!

so I got this problem(007)for the first time today (Mothers Day)and I thought it was congestion. After retrying several times I did a search and was brought here. After reading all the blogs(unlike the Idiot above me)I realized that If 50byts would not send It was not a size issue. I don't know if the https will work however because my file was 40.2MB compressed and zipped I decided to try a large carrier. As it turns out Pando sent it just fine. Pando is a separate mail service that has nothing to do with msm, yahoo, gmail, firewalls, etc. So give that a try if it "Just has to go out"

By the way and I apologize, I forgot to mention this in the above blog but I use Mozilla Firefox and thats where I got the message so it's not a browser problem either.

ok. i had the same problem and i tried different things: originally i was attaching a 55kb word document and every time i got this message... Then i copied the file into notepad (.txt) and it worked fine. Totally weird because it's not the first time i was attaching word documents... i know it still doesn't solve .mov or .avi problem but may be helpful for ppl who urgently need to send their e-mail...

Had a problem sending an MP3 file that was about 3 mb. Took forever and then finally gave me the error message 008. Went to https://www.gmail.com and it sent almost immediately.

got the error code 766 message 5 times and the atlast my gmail account openend .i did nothing except retrying again and again.

Happening for me (code 008) and im just sending text, but at least i can now see my emails as i was not able to for the entire day :(

I am getting an error with Gmail while sending an attachment of 15 kb file. The error displayed is

What could be the problem and what is solution.

SOLUTION TO "oops...the system was unable to perform your operation (error code 008)" error

1. Open explorer.

2. Goto Tools>internet options > privacy tab.

3. Move the settings slider to low.

This solves the problem.

I've been using GMail as my primary e-mail for the past month, and it's worked pretty well. Searching e-mail is nice, the tagging features are helpful (for instance, I added a tag for a client which automatically includes every e-mail which contains contains their domain name), and it integrates well with the Google personalized desktop.

However...

Last week I wasn't able to access my e-mail for most of an afternoon. I kept getting a Javascript popup that said:

"oops...the system was unable to perform your operation"

I checked with friends via chat, and they were able to get their GMail just fine - it was just my account. I tried other browsers, cleared cookies, even tried other computers; same message. Searches revealed others who'd had the same problem, but no solutions which worked for me.

This was a problem, since my e-mail contained conference call numbers, important project information, etc.

GMail does provide a POP interface, so I'll probably run an e-mail client to keep a local e-mail copy in case this happens again. I'm posting this in case someone has come up with a solution to this problem and to recommend an offline e-mail backup (which is just good sense, anyways, in case the internet connection goes down).

Hi I was having the same problem I was trying to attach a 106mb file to send and I was getting Explorer 008 code error ..... Good old Microsoft!!!! so then I opened mozilla reopened gmail and I then sent the same e-mail from there and hey!!! Presto it works and it gave no errors and is now sending.....

I get this message whenever I have an attachment. It's not a big attachment (140 KB) so all you folks saying that it wont work with a big attachment, read again. Also, I do not and never had the Google web accelerator, so don't assume that scenario. I used Yahoo and it worked. I switched over to another pc with a faster speed and it worked finally in gmail. Gmail has some upload bandwidth issue. Read again.. GMAIL HAS ISSUES WITH UPLOAD BANDWIDTH. PLEASE FIX GOOGLE ENGINEERS, BECAUSE IN YAHOO IT WORKS. I'm fed up with this ooops excuse for attachments.

This problem is temperory in nature will resolve with in a few minutes. This is said by google support on this issue.

I have recently added a wireless router and since this I am getting the same error. I can log into my gmail account, however, it seems to hang and then I get this error. I have logged a call with my  router provider to investigate. Has anyone raised this problem with Gmail to look into?

all files you upload are filtered and grows about 30% in size, meaning a 10mb document will be 13mb all together, so try sending only low size files or try another client.  I recieve the error message when I try to send a large file on gmail, but when I send it via my Business account I dont have a problem. Also like everyone has been posting, check your internet firewalls and all those little icons that at the top of your page (if you have the gmail or yahoo or msn webbar) each have differant settings and if that still doesnt work then your computer oficially sucks,

Size matter... well there is alot different reason for 008i guess... try all the solution and u will get one right... my problem was the size of the document... thats all ::)

Try to set the MTU value in your router configuration to  1492.

I changed the attachment size to just under 30 megs and it worked.

My wife had the 007 Oops message.

The reason: I had recently (last couple of days) upgraded the firmware in our Netgear router/gateway to the latest and "greatest" release. It now comes with a Trend security package built-in. Turning this on fucks up file transfer of .doc (i.e. Word) files. Turning it off and Gmail gets - and can send email with attachments as it used to. My problem was the Trend security software was far too zealous ! Not a bad thing I suppose, err on the side of caution, but bloody frustrating for a few hours !

Hi all, I think simply logging out and re-establishing a new session may be enough to work around this issue. I just tried this (using https) and it's working fine again but I'm fairly sure I was using https in the first place too. Anyway good luck.

Me too on the 008 error, happened when sending a 64mb attachment but not when sending 3mb attachment. i think in my case its to do with size. ...i only switched to gmail because i was sick of hotmail screwing up with attachments and i distictly remember gmail boasting deftness at handling such things. what was the name of the site? transferlargefiles.com?

The attachments cannot be sent to the receiver of the e-mail. G-mail worked very well for the past 1 years and now I face this problem, how do I send attachments?

I have encountered the same problem since the zip file has password lock. After I remove password lock, I could use it perfectly. It may cause due to the reason of not be able to scan the file.

There is an entry in the troubleshooting section of gmail about this issue (102 errors). It has helped me.

Seeing how far back the posts on this problem date it would appear that none of the reasons  posted are correct and I can't help but wonder why the Google team hasn't fixed this yet- the first post was NOV 2005!!!!!

This just started a week ago on my home, work and laptop computers it's a daily event and is getting pretty old. I have no firewall, I have no accelerator not sending 10 minute videos attachments or no attachments not relevant as it hapens everytime I open Gmail. I always have to close and re-open. C'mon Google hop to it!!!

Great workaround! The https:// worked first time. The next time I tried with my usual link (non https) it worked fine too, but I kept getting Error 008 until I swapped in the https.

I don't believe that this issue's associated with installed security software, because for me the problem is totally intermittent.

i'm getting this on a CLEAN XP installation, SP3 and all Windows Updates installed, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise... no firewall apps besides XP, no content-filtering apps. Default browser security.

I've tried both HTTP and HTTPS, no luck.

I've got an error code 008 when I was trying to send an email for a month ago, then I thought there was a server problem of gmail at first. Then I tired again the next day, the same error I got. Gmail help centre said there is conflicting the software in my pc with gmail. But I didn't install anything before that code error. So, I think there will be any problems of IE7 therefore, I tried to send emails using Firefox, but I've got error code 103 because of the security problem and advice change to https:// But I have been using https: only. Until now, that gmail cannot be used and sometimes it is so slow for loading from here to there.

I have tired too many ways above methods but they are not worked.

Any advices?!!!!!!!!!

My work-around your mileage may vary.

I receive this error intermittently when I connect from all over the world with various PCs, virus, spy and firewall interfaces. Solutions other than using an alternate email program:

- Allow Gmail to fully load ‘all’ the attachments (all go blue) before you send.

- Save in ‘Draft’ first and then open Draft allowing all the attachments to load then send.

Gmail needs to address the ability for us to disengage the Draft function which appears to be part of the problem. Other email programs have the same boggle recently but after letting them fully load the attachments they usually work.

Why is this happening...I turned off firewall that makes no sense!!!

That's a support page that will tell you exactly what the problem is.

I had the same problem,  I resolved it by losing the browser and relaunching it. Works just fine. I guess google must try and resolve this bug.  That might help all of us.

We also face this problem in the time of attachment,We think its the problem of ie,we in stalled  latest firefox the same problem exits,cleared all temp and every thing,if any one have the solution for this?

If you're getting error code 6400, it has nothing to do with firewalls / attachments.  Just retry sending it after a minute or so (may have to try several times). The prob seems on Gmail side..

I get it all the time.  Usually works after 5 minutes.  Very annoying however.
