Windows Media Player 11 (Beta) available for public download - Jon Galloway

Windows Media Player 11 (Beta) available for public download

As promised, WMP 11 Beta is available for public download here. It was leaked a few days ago, but this is the official Microsoft release.

What struck me is that this is the default version on the WMP download page. Normally MS is a bit more cautious with Beta releases - they're available, but never the default. I'm a beta junkie, so this doesn't worry me at all, but it's an interesting shift in MS's generally cautious release approach. Keeping up with the Joneses?

Corrected. Thanks, Wally. At least, due to the magic of copy and paste, I was consistent.

Funny - I woke up this morning dreaming that my blog was littered with hundreds of spelling errors...

Unfortunatelly it does not work under LUA, when I install it and select that I do not want a music store it hangs when upgrading to my selected music store (d'oh).

Jon G., seeing the "Joneses" link in the context of your post, I thought for a moment that Google had a competitor to Media Player on their Labs page! But I don't see one there, so I guess you just mean Google's products in general. :-)

Maybe they're trying to be "Web 2.0" about it.. perpetual beta and software that doesn't work properly seems to be cool these days; the reality TV equivalent of software development.

Also, WMP10 was beta quality when it was released as a final product, IMO...

Yep, that's what I meant - this release had a Web 2.0 perpetual beta feel to it.

Well, I downloaded it, and I love it. I am also a beta junkie so it doesn't matter to me. Also it looks great.
