Installing Team Foundation Server 2008 on SQL Server 2008

One of the prerequisites for TFS 2008 is that it must be installed to work with SQL Server 2005 SP2 or SQL Server 2008. However, TFS 2008, by itself, will not work with SQL Server 2008. You’ll receive an error message that your SQL Server instance is not compatible as I’ve mentioned at http://tinyurl.com/4shjod. You’ll receive other error messages such as Full Text not being installed. After struggling for a couple of days, I decided to ask one of my local TFS guru’s, Steve Andrews. He pointed me to an article that led me to Abdelhamid’s blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/aabdou/archive/2008/05/13/team-foundation-server-sp1-beta-now-available.aspx. Following this, I was able to get it installed.

I have merged the TFS sp1 sucessfully and tried installing from that folder. But still I am getting the same error.

The System Health Check has detected a problem that will cause Setup to fail.

Description

The selected instance of SQL Server is not compatible with Team Foundation Server 2008.

Workaround / Remedy

The selected instance of SQL Server is not a version of SQL Server that is compatible with Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2008. Verify that the selected instance of SQL Server is a supported version and has any required service packs installed before you try to install this product. For more information about supported versions of SQL Server, download the most recent version of the Team Foundation Installation Guide, which is available from the Microsoft Web site.

Please help me...

Hello, I am having the same issue as Melwin is.  After merging SP1 into TFS2008, I get the "The selected instance of SQL Server is not compatible with Team Foundation Server 2008."  I am running Server 2008, SQL 2008 SP1.  Please advise.

Thank you.

You need to do a bit more hacking if you have SQL Server 2008 SP1 installed.  See here <a href:="support.microsoft.com/.../>

I am trying to install TFS2008 on a windows server 2003 machine having Sql server 2008.

When I ran the installation for TFS 2008,I got   SQL Compatability issues and Full Text search issues.

I did lot of research to fix the problem and figured that I need to install SP1 on Sql server 2008.Did that and now my machine configuration is:

SQL server 2008 sp1 (version 10.0.2531.0) and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Checked/Debug version

I followed the below url that Microsoft recommended:

support.microsoft.com/.../969985

followed the below steps

To integrate the installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1

 1.

Download SP1 from the Microsoft Web site , and save the update to a folder on the local computer.

For example, you can save the file to C:\SP1Download.

 2.

From the files that originated on the DVD for Team Foundation Server, copy the AT folder to a location on the local computer.

For example, you can copy the folder to C:\InstallMedia.

 3.

Open a Command Prompt window, and type the following command, replacing C:\SP1Download with the location that you chose in step 1 and C:\SP1Extract with a separate location on the local computer:

    C:\SP1Download \TFS90SP1-KB949786-ENU /extract:C:\SP1Extract

 4.

Create a folder where you can merge files from SP1 and the DVD.

 5.

Type the following command, replacing C:\InstallMedia with the location that you chose in step 2, C:\SP1Extract with the location that you chose in step 3, and C:\MergeFolder with the absolute path of the location that you chose in step 4:

    msiexec /a C:\InstallMedia \vs_setup.msi /p C:\SP1Extract \TFS90sp1-KB949786.msp TARGETDIR=C:\MergeFolder

The 5th step got failed saying that " The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the Program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgraded patch."

For your information ,

Installed Windows Installer KB942288-v4

1) currently i am using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Checked/Debug version and SP1Checked/Debug and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2.

2) I am having Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition (x86) and  Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1.

When i try to merge using msiexec   i am getting the same error (The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the Program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgraded patch. ")

 1. Is it any different TFS 2008 version i need to use.

  * If Yes, What version of TFS 2008 i need to use  to make it work.

   2. Is it problem with the operating system or some secuity patches from microsoft not allowing me to proceed further

  * If it is problem with the operating system what operating system i need to use and what are all the service pack i need to install to resolve this issue.

Please give all possible scenarios to make it work.

Your help is valuable for me.
