While cruising my RSS feeds in Google Reader I noticed that the Patterns and Practices Group at Microsoft just released a bunch of pocket guides for designing different types of applications. They have a guide for Rich Client architecture, Web architecture, Service Oriented architecture, Mobile architecture and Agile architecture.
Check out the CodePlex project at http://www.codeplex.com/AppArch.
Although this books title states the book is for ASP.NET 3.5 application architecture and design, you will be able to take these concepts well beyond ASP.NET. The concepts and technics that this author conveys can be used for all Windows .NET development. The author starts out explaining basic 1 tier architecture and eventually graduates you to a five tier architecture.
The book covers ER diagrams, domain modeling, common design patterns, SOA, WCF and even database design. This book is a good starter book for those of you that want to move out of the developer role and start learning about basic principals in applications design.
There is only one downside the book and that is the formatting of the code samples. There seems to be an issue with the spacing and tabs (at least in the book). Other than that it is a good read.
You can purchase the book on the PackT Publishing site.
We are almost coming up to our one year anniversary of the Southeast Valley .NET user group (SEVDNUG). As part of our one year anniversary we are looking at launching a newly branded web site with new features like blog rolls, pod casts and more. This is where we need some hope because my Photoshop / graphic design skills stink!
We are looking for new images for the main site logo, our soon to be launched Most Valuable Member logo (similar to that of the Microsoft MVP program/logo) and a new logo for our pod casts. The chosen design will get their choice of some free software. I have some licenses of Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Expression Blend, Microsoft Windows Vista, controls from Telerik and Infragistics, and many more.
Please submit your designs or questions to Joseph Guadagno at jguadagno@sevdnug.org.
Color Scheme
Since our user group is based in the Southeast part of the Phoenix area we are looking to theme our web site with a desert theme. Our past logo incorporated a cactus in its design.
This is the new color scheme that we are looking at using:
| Color value | Name | used for | Color |
| #F0F0D9 | off white | Body Background | |
| #FAFAF1 | off white (light) | Page Background | |
| #AF9256 | lighter brown | Sidebar Heading | |
| #996633 | light brown | Main Content Heading | |
| #FBEBB9 | tan | | |
| #FFD85E | yellow brown | Borders | |
| #663300 | brown | | |
| #CC003C | reddish | Page Title | |
| #009900 | green | | |
| #E9F9FF | pale blue | Sub Menu | |
