Well in the pre keynote, PDC2009 was announced. PDC2009 will be in Los Angeles, CA happening Nov 17th - November 19th, 2009.

Microsoft Research

Talk is mostly about what Microsoft research does and why it exists.

Source of IP and new Products

MSR generates roughly 25% of the company's patents and generally MSR patents are more "fundamental"

Problem Solving

Ability to bring smart people to bear rapidly on hard problems confronting products.

Basic Research -> Agility

Basic research group allows a company like Microsoft to respond more rapidly to change.
Research provides a reservoir of technology, expertise and people that can be quickly brought to bear

Microsoft mapped out the cooling system in the convention center to analysis the use of the energy.

Microsoft uses these same sensors to determine the hot spots in there data sensors. They use these sensors to manage and regulate the energy used in the data centers.

They are trying to project on to surface not part of the initial surface.

They hovered a sheet of paper over a Surface computing desktop and it projected a completely different image on the sheet of paper.

WPF

Microsoft is shipping a WPF Ribbon Bar this week.
Jump list allow you to add categories to the them like subscribe, Tasks, etc.
Touch support will be available.
New WPF controls kit being released today. Includes controls like DataGrid, Calendar and others.

Part 1 of the 2 part keynote.

Windows 7

Introduce Windows 7 Client

Taskbar now has thumbnails
Each application has it's own most recently used list called jump list
Windows can be docked to side, kind of the old MDI interface
User has control of the Notification area icons. What gets displayed, the ordered of the icons.

Windows Explorer

Search has highlighting of the words found

Windows Homegroup

Classify what on your network people can see.
Search across multiply pcs in the home group for content.
Can send content from one device to another like from PC to play on your stereo system or home theatre.
All of the devices that are seen in the homegroup, you will have access to all devices. Windows will automatically switch between home printer and office printer.

Window Touch computing

Mouse commands have been refactored to allow for "Surface" like UI, stretching and resizing.
On screen keyboard supported predictive text.

PDC2008 Experience: Day 1 (Keynote)

Got woken up by a garbage truck this morning at 5:00am which stinks.

We had to let at least one bus go by because it was full. Off to PDC for breakfast. Breakfast was typical; cereal, coffee, bagels, and fruit.

At the keynote, they were streaming on the screens real time (almost) tweets and flickr feeds.

Channel 9 guy walked by a few minutes before the keynote started.

Ozzie Smith talked at first about Cloud Computing and why it has come about.

Windows Azure

Windows Azure announced. Windows in a cloud. It is being released as a community preview release. More features will be released in time. Services layers (outlined in the image).

Azure will be free for now, later on it will be a pay for service based on usage and uptime.
