That's great advice...thanks. :) I've personally "unhidden" all my folders by default (by opening Explorer, clicking on Tools > Folder Options and selecting "Show all files and folders" under the view tab. If anyone else has great ideas on how to eliminate the persistent "Links" folder feel free to post!

I get the dreaded "Waiting for" messages as well. I haven't quite figured out why so! I mean there are several of them up there and at any given time I should certainly get a GPS fix very quickly..
I've been reading up on Navman and testing the GPS unit and came to several conclusions: 1) Make sure your unit contains the latest ROM upgrades 2) Walking (or driving around) with the unit will yield better results than trying to get results standing still 3) A GPS lock takes on average 4-5 minutes 4) For best results, follow the sequence I outlined in my blog entry 5) Location matters - walking in an area with trees or other obstructions will limit the effectiveness of the device 6) The unit will never work indoors 7) Check the GPS status page for the appearance of yellow, green and red bars. The presence of yellow bars means that the sattelites have been detected by the device. Walking around will usually kick in the triangulation 8) Weather matters - overcast skies affect the effectiveness of the device

I too purchased one of these cameras for my iPaq H5550 and got exactly the same results as you (camera not connected ...). I seeking a solution to the problem I stumbled across your website. Your comments got me to thinking that maybe my iPaq did not have the very latest version of the OS. It was true, there was a later release (April 2004) which promised a host of bug fixes and improvements including support for SDIO cameras and scanner. Just as you did, I upgraded my OS (somewhat nervously) without problem and reinstalled my camera software. There was some improvement but still no pictures: all I get are grey JPEGs of about 1.5k regardless of resolution setting. The zoom control does not function althought it makes all the right sounds. When I click the shutter I get all the correct sounds but no pictures. The frame counter does not decrement either. When I plug in the camera, he iPaq recognises it but instead of bringing up the camera control panel, all I get is a small dialogue box which says something like 'mp 21'. The camera control panel has to be launched manually. Do these symptoms seem familiar? I have upgraded my iPaq to the latest OS but am using the same drivers that came with the camera. Like you I am beginning to think there is a software problem but I am not sure where the problem is. Any ideas? It is frustrating having this little camera but not getting the results I have been expecting. I will assume the camera is OK - it is new - and suspect there is an incompatibilty, possibly with the camera driver and the OS. The image viewer and image zone software appears to function OK. That would explain your grey 1k photos. The above website states that the driver is specifically designed to work on "Pocket PC 2002" devices. According to the following website, the camera is supported on Windows Mobile 2003 devices (such as your iPAQ). http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc-JAVA/offweb/vac/us/en/sm/pocketpc/FA185A_faq.html Another suggestion offered on the HP Forums is to hard reset your camera (backup your data first), install the latest drivers and plug in the camera. I removed it as per the registry by deleting the value. It went away for about two weeks and now today it is back. Went and I checked the value for the entry in the registry and it is still blank. Any other suggestions, what would happen if I just deleted the entry entirely from the registry.
I've taken a few pictures this evening, checked the EXIF metadata and everything appears to be normal (the timestamp corresponds to the time I took the photo). You might want to try the following: a) The HP Photosmart Mobile uses the EXIF 2.1 standard. Make sure the software you are using complies with that standard. Otherwise, it may be incorrectly reading the information from your files. b) Adobe Photoshop Album supports EXIF but some users have reported issues: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&frame=right&th=7328f3ac3dcc03e5&seekm=3f2aa4ff.1028320468%40news.t-online.de#s You may want to try a variety of EXIF-enabled software to see if you are getting the same results. Keep in mind some software will overwrite the EXIF data. c) Upgrade your SDIO drivers, take a few photos and see if your EXIF data is now registering correctly. d) If you are a developer, you can create a program which takes the file creation date stamp and populates the EXIF headers in your JPEG files one by one. I was having the same problems as everyone else... applied hotifx, registry patch, stack reset.... nothing worked. Then, I changed the name of my wireless network using the router utility. Following this, I ran the wireless wizard on my laptop. I entered the new wireless network name. Whaddayaknow! It worked. I changed the wireless network name back the way it was previously, re-ran the wireless wizard on the laptop and everything is still working. HTH LT

I came upon this problem today, and after searching through much of the same advice came upon this thread. Worked like a charm, thank you for being knowledgable and helpful.
This problem started happening to my laptop weeks after I installed Sp2 - there had been no problem and then one day it got sick. I have tried hours of fixes, including ones posted here. My laptop can connect to wirless networks - it is the CAT-5 cabled NIC that will not resolve an IP address! Any more thoughts on this matter? Thanks.

This is so cool! 24 is a great show. I enjoy waiting till the season comes out on DVD then watching it so I don't have to wait between episodes. :) Jean-Luc introduced me to the fingerprint scanner ($20 at the MS company store) and I've had a fun time with it! It is particularly useful when switching users so my wife can just touch the little red pad and WinXP will immediately switch from my account to hers. Looks like it still takes a number of steps, but the article on how to hack the fingerprint scanner is fascinating. What's the next 'easy' yet secure identification method? Retina scans? Gattaca type blood scanners? Embedded RFID tags? Looks like an exciting future ahead... :)

Yes, I have upload scripts to facilitate the task. However, if you don't use 3rd party helper programs or customized solutions (or FrontPage extensions) the steps I described is what's required to get a site online using VS2003. I'm really glad MS incorporated built-in FTP functionality in VS2005!

I believe that any DataLayer must be a simple code block, that they allow operations against DB. That code block would not have to know on the Business Entities. Single to specialize it is to execute the operations (Store Procedures and SQL Sentences) against the engine DB (SQL, Oracle, DB2, etc.), with which this setting. I saw your book coming out on VSTS 2005 and really wished it was through someone else other than Wrox. I was ripped off by the whole Wrox press sell-off and was stiffed on the advance for my C# threading book. I would have thought things got better once Wiley picked them up, but I have another friend who just wrote for them and has yet to receive the money he was supposed to get from his contract. I have to ask, what is the compulsion of developers to continue to write under this label?
Hi Tobin, I co-authored Professional Javascript 2nd Edition with the original Wrox Press. (Luckily) I received all my payments before the company was sold off to APress and Wiley. Like you, I've heard from many authors who weren't as lucky. When Wrox was sold off, I figured that was the last time I was going to write for them. Fast forward five years: I wrote several book proposals and pitched them to many publishers. The folks at Wiley and I hit it off right away. In my experience, the staff at Wiley are extremely responsive and I have no complaints whatsoever in terms of payments or contracts. In fact, they are a great bunch of people and very supportive. I'll send you contact information for a person who manages the contracts and advances process at Wiley via your blog - you can forward it to your friend to help him sort out his payment concerns. Why Wrox? Despite all of the tumultuous history of Wrox, it remains a respected brand in the development community. I personally own over 50+ Wrox books in my library. In the past month I have received pver 30,000 spam messages. So many that I can no longer approve the legitimate comments. Therefore I simply disabled comments from my weblog until I get something straightened out. Trackbacks have also become a problem - particularly with the subject matter of most of the sites that have been sending the bogus trackbacks. What's even worse is that I cannot disable trackbacks globally using my current publishing system so I therefore have to go back and manually disable the feature on the 380 posts I have made to my weblog. Otherwise I just have to delete 200-300 bogus trackbacks a day. Very frustrating!

After I downloaded the patch and added the IP address download, I ran a virus scan. Connectivity still did not work. As you can see I don't know much about computers and fixing this error. I left the computer and started it back up later to try again and SURPRISE... connectivity was reinstated. Don't know how, but it finally worked.

I'm having the same problem but with the wireless side of the router, if I connect hard wired, I have no issues, but when I connect to a wireless router all I get is the 169 address, then that goes away & I am left with no connect message.
I'm going to try the winsock & netsh fixes & c if either works for me.

A good one would be WindowBlinds, since it's easy to use and offers all the features of usual Windows styles, along with a lot more like window border transparency and progress bar animations. Unfortunately, older computers might experience slowdowns running it since it's a bit heavy on the resources side. Now, if you want the alt-tab replacement you could use TopDesk as well. It emulates pretty nicely the Win-tab effect on Windows Vista.

I have 256 MB RAM and integrated graphic gard. I installed windowblinds and put on the aeroglassv5 theme. This is heaven. Transparent taskbar, starmenu, window frames. It looks so vista. You cannot tell the difference. If WindowBlinds6 is used, you can even have blured window frames and transparent menus. And ofcoruse, system doesnot slow down as WB uses same amount of resourses as any other normal XP theme. Along with that if you put on Vista Trnformation Pack 6.0 (for low RAM), it will look exactly like vista.
The combination of removing the old anti-virus programme (Panda, yugghh) and fixing winsock did the trick for me !

What about winflip for the Win-Tab function? I installed it and the performance of my machine was not affected. It looks nice and has a lot of cool features.

fast aero. hmmm. i installed it and while it was running i could not shut windows down the safe way ie start\shutdown\shutdown. i did a system restore to before i installed fastaero and lo and behold! i can shut windows down!
Tried the netsh winsock reset and hasn't work. I am only accessing this on my computer which is cabled however the laptop is wireless and will not connect.

Huge problem with VS2005 FTP. Went to save work and the save failed, but it didn't just fail; It saved a blank page and I lost all of my code. I was using VS2005 to work on a live page and was hooked up to it using FTP.
I had the problem of the computer losing connection to my DLINK G604T after about an hour. Both Wireless and LAN would both go at the same time, and the only way to fix it was a reboot. After spending about 2 weeks trying to find a solution on the web I found a mention from another site that it might be the memory overloading in the router/modem. It said to try setting network card IP address (mine was on automatic). faq.dlink.com.au/.../DisplayTemplate.aspx
This appears to have done the job. Now my ISP is TPG so not sure if the setting are generic for other ISP, but thought I would pass this on, as I know how frustrating it was to resolve it. Cheers

Tried Winsock fix and I did briefly get a connection but it was dropped. Now have removed security software (Panda 2007) and have connection again. Updating with Panda 2008 hopefully this will work better. But the problem seems to lie in the security software in my case, even if turned off no connection is possible. Suspect security software has corrupted something.

worked like a charm! i even called up tech support and they were absolutely useless.
ok this didn't work for me...finally after more than a week with no internet I found the system restore function that will restore your system back to that of a previous date. Just choose a date when your internet was fine and after a quick reconfiguration and shut down your computer should be restored to its proper (pre bad download) state.

Thanks for all the help guys. netbook just started limited connectivity error. tried winsockxpfix and netsh winsock reset and ipconfig etc. only thing that worked was using the recommendation to change your wireless settings, connect, and change them back. only thing I changed was ssip broadcast disabled to enabled. System connected. Changing back to enabled results in no connection. Ah well - broadcasting SSIP is something I can live with.

You may want to force the ip address. Figure out the range if IPs that your router is giving and find one well outside of the range. If your router is giving out ips like 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, etc. then pick one like 192.168.1.199 and manually set it. You'll have to manually set the dns servers as well, but once you do that, see if you can connect.
I've got a static ip on my main machine and since I port forward to that machine, I've got some machines that are static IPs, some that are DHCP. I actually prefer, for small networks, to set up static IPs to avoid these kinds of issues.
