Fixing Word 2007 Crash on Exit & Broken Mouse Support!

ms-office-2007

I love Office 2007, but recently I've had big problems with Word.

1.) I can't select text.....

It seems this is a common problem with a number of add-ins. In this case it was the Word plug-in for Snag-It 8 from TechSmith - when I uninstalled it, mouse support came back. Note that this is not JUST a Snag-It problem. A bit of searching on the web reveals that MANY plug ins can cause this problem.

2.) The more irritating but was that Word always crashes on exit. I tried disabling and removing all the add-ins, deleting all the auto loaded templates, even uninstalling and re-installing Office 2007 with no success. Just about the time I was about to commit to waste my day rebuilding my day - I found the answer in a newsgroup archive.

DO THIS !!!

  • 1. Start Regedit.
  • 2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
  • 3. Right mouse click on the "Data" folder and delete it.
  • 4. Close Regedit.

POOF - Word 2007 is back to it's awesome self !!

Fantastic - finally a simple solution to this nasty word crash.. I wonder what causes it in the first place.. I contracted HP about the hpz3r5ha.dll issue and they skirted responsibility.  Whatever, it seems better now.  Thanks :)

Sadly.. I have to redact my earlier comment.  After deletion of they key it subsequently recreated itself and the crash persisted.  Keep trying!

I have had very similar problems with a different HP dll, the only solution I can find to prevent Word crashing is to change the default printer from my HP printer to a different one such as the Microsoft XPS Document Writer.

I found this after upgrading to SP1.  Uninstalling SP1 worked, but the above is clearly more simple.

I had the same problem - Word and Power Point crashing on exit after Vista SP1. Changed HP printer to non-default, and all seems ok - cheers for the advice!

I didn't have the "data" directory but I went into:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\SnagItOfficeAddin.Connect

and changed the LoadBehavior to "0" (zero). This fixed it for me.

I didn't have any problems with plug-ins, but did have the crash on exit.  If it helps anyone, it only seemed to happen if I had Word data on the clipboard (ctrl-c on some text).  Setting a printer other than the HP as default seems to "fix" it, although it's not a good solution.  I didn't install the full HP suite, just the basic drivers, so the steps in Mike's post don't apply to me (thanks for the info, though, Mike).

I've also had problems with the HP network monitor service (it's a network printer) crashing on both my Vista and XP box when I come out of sleep.  I set it to auto-restart, which is lame, but works.  And naturally HP support tries to blame Microsoft.  Sigh...

Deleted the registry key <Data> and uninstalled the plug-ins such as Flash, ShockWave players and now

the mouse partially working in MS  Word 2007, for example inserting an bmp image into the word document and if try to select it then doesn't work, after setting up the generic text as the default printer instead of HP it allowed me to select the image only for first time, but later no way to select it again, strange !

On Word crashing on exit... this is Word 2000. I've removed and reloaded office 3 times. Same result. It crashes on exit. I've cleaned the registry. I've removed the add-ons (removed the .dot file, not just disabled them).  Two clues - it keeps asking for my name/company on loading to be used for workgroup config. That never happened before as I think its only supposed to happen once. Also I can prevent the crashing by loading winword.exe /a to theoretically disable add-ons although none show in the programs 'templates and add-ons" dialog. The real problem is that I can't convert  files to .pdf files as Acrobat hangs when converting .doc files. It works OK with other files however.

Any chance you might have a suggestion? Going on two days wasted.

    Thanks

I was experiencing constant crashing on exit in word 07, and the regedit mentioned above worked like a charm.  You don't even need to reboot.

Thanks, a great help.

Renaming the data file using regedit worked for me.  A new data file was made automatically on restarting system but it all seems to work ok, no Word crashes on exit.

Open Office 3 is free and works straight out of the box!!

click start go to printers and faxes and right click on any one of your non hp printer and set it as your default printer. Well if you do not have a non- HP printer, then set up a printer using the setup wizard there and select it as your default printer.

This should your problem in most cases.

Note: Make sure you select your HP printer while you have to print your files from within your PC.

and this solution's helped me too. I didn't have "SnagItOfficeAddin.Connect" like craig had, just "FPC_WordAddin.FpcWordAddin"and "PDFTransformer3.WordIntegration.1", so I've changed Loadbehavior to "0" and it's fixed my problem.

This worked in our office environment but with a side effect. We use other custom built macro addins (not the Snag-it addin). Our addins were duplicated and the duplicate addins do not work if it uses macro data (built-in buttons within the addin like templates work).

The user is okay with this side effect but it bothers me. Anyone know how you might fix this?

Well i had this problem in my OFFICE 2007 which i uninstalled and then got 2010 professional plus, but that also gave the same error that is crashed after i exit (stopped working properly...will look for solutions....stuff like that!!!). I tried the first method of deleting the registry but it didnt work. So i uninstalled my ENDNOTE software which was integrated with office, luckily my office is working fine now...

All these troubles started after the update from microsoft.

Thanks all.
