I just got the word that Red Gate’s .NET Reflector will be changing from to “paid only” starting with the upcoming version 7 in early march.
Full story here.
Any idea if this is going to remove (or prevent execution of) the version that are currently installed?
They said it would remain free, now they are saying something different, what will they say next.
Andrew, for what I know so far this is starting with versino 7, so current versions should not be affected.
At start they introduced the concept of free/pro versions but now they are removing the free one in favor of only the pro (paid) version.
I've had it happen a few times that Reflector refuses to run until updated, so I'm wondering if they will do this to all previous versions once they have a paid version up.
I don't have an issue with the $35 price tag, its the convenience of having lots of copies spread across all sorts of dev machines without worrying about license issues.
Ahh, I hear you. Makes sense. I will try to find out more about that.
You are right, the issue is not exactly $35 for a wonderful tool but not being able to use it in more than one machine is huge deal.
Got it. Thanks for the input!
Yep, RedGate have really dropped the ball on this one.
It'll be interesting to see what JetBrains come up with - even if it's not free, I'd rather give my money to a company who *doesn't* use extortion to boost their profits!
I wonder why you use the word "extortion" in this case. Could you elaborate a little?
While I felt "disapoint", looking around, at various posting about this, it seems like it is creating a lot of negative sentiment about the company.
Mono has some stuff but I have tried it yet.
