  • Game Developers Conference

This week, Miguel de Icaza, Geoff Norton, Michael Hutchinson, and I are headed out to San Francisco to man the Mono booth at the Game Developers Conference

    What's this?  “Mono-game-what”, you say?

If you've been following the unfolding story on Miguel's blog then you may be aware that Mono provides some pretty interesting advantages over traditional embedded scripting engines.

This has lead Mono to be used for handling game logic, AI, etc, in games and game engines, as well as simulations.

So, with all of the excitement this has drawn (primarily from Miguel's blog posts), we decided it would be worthwhile to engage the greater game developer community. If you are considering scripting options for your current or next game, or just want to figure out how to deal with your scripting performance problems, we hope you will swing by and say "Hi."

Also, there is a lot more functionality in Mono than just our runtime, so if you are at the GDC and want to discuss some other topics (for instance Moonlight or Mono on the Mac), we're happy to talk about those things, too.

If you're not going to be able to make it out to the conference, but are still interested in embedding Mono, you can read about Scripting with Mono, Embedding Mono, and Licensing Mono.

  • .NET (on Mac) Rocks!

This past week, .NET Rocks interviewed Miguel and Geoff about the status of Mono on the Mac. If you're interested in finding out the latest information regarding .NET development on the Mac, you should definitely check it out. As informative as it is entertaining (and timely, too).

In anticipation of the release of this interview, we released a few important updates for Mono, including:

    1. An updated Mono installer for Mac OS X which includes MonoDevelop and Gtk#, as well as some very nice updates to System.Windows.Forms

      MonoDevelop on OS X
      MonoDevelop running on OS X
    2. An updated Virtual Machine image with Mono 1.2.6 based on openSUSE 10.3. This updated image includes lots of new demo applications, and comes in both VMWare and Live CD formats. More information here.

  • Bonjour

It seemed like a good way to say "Hello" to weblogs.asp.net would be to talk about the latest Mono.Zeroconf work done my co-worker, Aaron Bockover, in order to better support Bonjour with .NET on Windows.  Specifically, he is now shipping source with a Visual Studio 2008, as well as Windows Binaries.

In case you are unaware (from the Mono.Zeroconf webpage):

    Mono.Zeroconf

Mono.Zeroconf is a cross platform Zero Configuration Networking library for Mono and .NET. It provides a unified API for performing the most common zeroconf operations on a variety of platforms and subsystems: all the operating systems supported by Mono and both the Avahi (http://avahi.org/) and Bonjour/mDNSResponder (http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/index.html) transports.
