Visual Source Safe 2005

In our last Winnipeg.NET Users Group a member asked me what’s coming with VSS?  Well, truth is, VSS has been off my radar for about a year already.  After watching a VSS Roadmap presentation a while back I decided to write off the whole thing in hopes that Microsoft will just buy Vault – or something equivalent.

Well, my bad.

Turns out that I should have been paying more attention to VSS that will be shipped with VS.NET 2005.   Turns out there are a few improvements that you might want to read about.

On a similar note, you should start to dive into the Visual Studio Team System stuff… http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/teamsystem/Team/default.aspx which discusses having an integrated SCM environment that takes into account source control, work item tracking, reporting, policies, notifications, and reporting….

Can we all say “FINALLY” all at the same time… Can I hear an AMEN BROTHER?  … or more like “About Time!!”

Proof will be in time as I have yet to use any of these new tools on any “real” project… look out for Golf.NET 2005 though….

I still don't see for sure whether or not Visual Source Safe 2005 will be based on SQL Server - seems like it's not, right? This is still a BIG drawback in my opinion - MS should get it "right" and put it onto a stable platform rather than keeping those crappy files in the filesystem.......
