Team System in Hong Kong and Other News

I’m in Hong Kong right now (amazing city by the way) once more spreading the good word about Team System.  I have to say – what a great and eager bunch out here.   We’re gonna have a lot of fun with Team System this week.  Next week I’ll be in England again working with customers on Team System adoption and process maturity strategies – followed by another week of customized workshop-based Team System training in England as well.  I’ll then be doing some additional Team System training in Canada the week after – which apparently, is where I’m from – go figure!

More importantly, I want to make you aware of an important place to go and find information about and discuss Team System.  It’s the new Team System Forums.   I’ll be working in the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server, Visual Studio Team System Workshop, and MSF forums for the most part.

Representing Servers in Team System's LDD

Lately, I’ve been asked the following question more than once: “Using the Logical Datacenter Designer, how would I place the database on the same server as my web server?”  Well, this is a great question and exposes a problem in the way we are communicating what the LDD is supposed to represent.

First – with the LDD you CAN NOT represent a web site and a database server on the same logical server.

The Logical Datacenter Designer is used to create diagrams of interconnected logical servers that represent the logical structure of a datacenter.  They key here is the term “logical server.”  When people are asking if they can put IIS and SQL on the same machine – they really are working with two Logical Servers – IIS and a Database Server. Logical Servers represent application hosts in the datacenter.  How these logical servers are configured with regards to where they are installed is really a “physical” characteristic.  When using the LDD you are really specifying the Logical Servers (some may see these as services such as IIS Web Server, SQL Server, etc).

It’s official.  I’m now a Microsoft MVP in Solutions Architect as well as a Microsoft Regional Director.  Solution Architect MVP’ness (I think of Kate and giggle out loud when I say that that word) is common for Regional Directors and I’m very proud to be included in this group.
