Strangeloop - Scaling ASP.NET with a Flick of a Switch!!

Published 21 May 07 11:17 PM | Joel Semeniuk

Writing scaleable apps in ASP.NET is not an easy task.  Teams often wrestle with being productive (focusing on features) vs building a well architected and scalable solution.

Here's another scenario.  What if you have already deployed your apps and need to meet performance requirements you never anticipated when you first released?  Do you re-architect/re-build? How much time and money would that take?   What if you could "flick a switch" and increase the performance and scalability of your site by 50%/100%/200%?

If that possibility excites you - so will Strangloop's AppScaler.  You must check out what this box will do for you without ANY code changes to any of your existing ASP.NET web applications.  Literally, with a flick of a switch this network device will come to life and analyze the traffic going back and forth between your users and your servers and continually find ways to optimize traffic - a literal gift from the heavens for dynamic or AJAX based web sites.

Keep a close eye on this company, as I personally believe this is one of the most innovative network devices since the network load balancer.

I might consider it more if I had any concept of what it does. A website full of marketing jargon for a product aimed at technological decision makers kinda sucks.

I thought the website was clear- much better then most in this space. If they do what they say they can do these guys will change how ASP.NET sites are delivered- good find Joel! I'm going to track these guys- I bet they are acquired in less then 18 months.

Check out the blog by Richard Campbell of DNR fame to find out more about the product- this is very cool.(http://www.campbellassociates.ca/blog/PermaLink,guid,1ee1c4cd-fa2f-4934-91d8-7eba7c7cbcb6.aspx)

Meh, sorry but scaling asp.net with a flick of the switch is marketing hype.  If you design the DB wrong and don't properly architect a solution with scalability in mind, you are screwed.  Your database is always the bottleneck and if your site sucks because of session/viewstate, you have serious problems in your design.  A flick of the switch is not going to fix a badly designed system.  I have seen products like this before and the market is just not there.  You still need skilled people to develop apps that scale well.  If you want to know what is involved into creating sound architectures, take a look at highscalability.com/.../24.  SL does not even touch the surface of what is really involved in the architecture of complex high-load web apps.
