[Languages] Asml Eats the Dining Philosophers for Breakfast!
20 August 03 10:40 AM | CSharpener | with no comments

I have posted a short article, AsmL Eats the Dining Philosophers for Breakfast in my brand new CSharpener on .NET Story Category. AsmL is a very interesting new executable literate specification language implemented on the .NET Framework. AsmL comes to you from the Foundations of Software Engineering group at Microsoft Research. Hmmm, if I keep going, you won't need to read my little article!

Exception Management Application Block References

See Digging into the Exception Management Block.

Scott Hanselman has saved me the trouble of accumulating useful references to this important Microsoft Application Block.  I'm saving his link here for my own future use, and, incidentally, yours!

But Now Competing In The New "Useful UI" Category Is ....

Two feedback comments led me to the also-free SpaceMonger.  Like SequoiaView, SpaceMonger also uses Treemaps to create a highly useful file space visualization tool.  SpaceMonger weighs in at only 212K, which makes it very carryable and emailable for use on multiple systems.

When I first posted a simple "Thank you!" for FolderSizes, I didn't know how many great harddisk management solutions were available and had no idea what I was starting!

And The Clear "Unusual UI" Winner Is ...

SequoiaView!  This harddisk space manager takes a completely different approach and I found myself investigating my file system in ways I would not have dreamed without it!

The Visualization Section of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven has used Cushion Treemaps, invented by Jack van Wijk, to provide an inspirational example of file system visualization. The user's selection and view is highly configurable.

Don't miss this one!

More Harddisk Space Managers

I feel I must also give credit to Joachim Marder's TreeSize Professional, the commercial harddisk space manager I have faithfully used for the past several years.  TreeSize Pro is an excellent product and quite inexpensive.  Marder also offers a freeware version, TreeSize V1.7

In a comment to my previous post about FolderSizes, “kryp” recommended Folder Size Property Page, a free shell extension that adds a new tab for the Properties dialog when you view properties for a folder.  I tried it out and am happy to recommend it, also.

While CSharpener's Weblog is certainly not a sales platform or freeware marketing page, I do sometimes like to recommend utilities I have found helpful.  These qualify.  Enjoy!

FolderSizes

It's time to applaud Mark Richards for FolderSizes, his free disk space management utility.  I just used it again, today, to shake some farbles from my system.  Strongly recommended!

11/25/2003 Update:  It looks like FolderSizes is now a commercial product priced at US $ 29.95.  When I first posted this article, it was free.

[Farbles ::= "Those unnecessary thingies that somehow manage to attach themselves to almost anything (like the synthetic bacon bit crumbles & crouton fragments that you cannot seem to separate from the side of your salad bowl no matter how hard you try).”]

[Farble ::= “That *thing* you seem to have trouble shaking off from your finger.“]
