State of the Gym V1
Most people don't even know that I have a home climbing gym, because I dropped off the face of the earth nearly six months ago to take some private time. In November I started climbing at vertical world and by December 20th I had my first wall up at home. The current wall is kind of a joke. 4' wide by 8' tall at about a 30 degree angle. For any climbers out there, this isn't a very nice wall to begin with, and start adding a bunch of 0 to 15 degree off vertical holds, and you quickly find that the problems get extremely complex.
So what is up right now? Well, we have courses ranging anywhere from V4 to V9/10. Had some of the top climbers in the US come over and help set routes for me. Thank god for Vertical World and the bouldering crew at the Redmond Gym. Primarily Johnnie Harkness (#3 US Boulder Climber in the 18-19 division) for bringing over some of his holds and throwing up insanely complex routes.
Moving forward we are adding two vert walls (13'+ high), and a 5 degree slab. I'm most interested in this area because I'm about a V2/3 climber and most of the problems I'll be training on happen at the slab to vert range. After that is in, we'll add the bulge which is basically a vert to 50+ degree off vertical to 15 degree off vertical to vertical area. This is similar to the bulge they have at the Redmond Vertical World gym if you get a chance to stop by.
Currently those are all the projects lined up, and I have the concrete guy coming sometime today, so I should probably get some sleep before they show up and we lay a bunch of nice anchors into the floor for framing the wall. I'll keep everyone posted as walls go up, I buy some new holds, or cool routes get set. Who knows, maybe I'll get graced by a couple of top notch climbers following Johnnie back from Joshua Tree in California.
