Microsoft should have an official release of their MVC tecnology and distributed cache by 2010. If they get the ORM released (the successor to the relatively new LINQ to SQL) it will be possible to do in .NET what they've been doing for a decade in Java Enterprise. It's nice to see the market gel for a decade or so before moving in with your own products, and you can't beat using the free intellectual property provided by the open-source community (Hibernate, JBoss Cache, JBoss Workflow products...). Now, if they could only come up with a high level business rules language, we're there. I suggest they download Drools and just copy it. Shhhhhhh!

The most advanced and mature scalability enabler tool out in the .NET market today is XAP.NET by GigaSpaces (<a rel="nofollow" target="_new" href="http://www.gigaspaces.com/wiki/display/XAP66NET/XAP.NET+6.6+Documentation+Home">www.gigaspaces.com/.../XAP.NET+6.6+Documentation+Home).

It is not only providing distributed caching but also a reach execution scalability platform. These two core capabilities make it the first .NET Application Server. Its core functionality is based on XAP that is the Java based Application server by GigaSpaces.

ASP.NET Cache was good for single server environments but wasn't scalable at all.
