SourceSafe 2005 - Getting back the old-style dialogs

Here’s a tip for those poor suckers (like me) who are still stuck using Visual SourceSafe. With SourceSafe 2005 Microsoft tried to clean up some of the ugly UI aspects that carried over from previous versions. In particular, a couple of the old, non-resizeable dialogs were totally replaced with shiny new models.

Unfortunately, at least two of the new dialogs – the “Add Files” dialog and the “Set Working Folder” – have actually lost useful features in their new incarnation. Specifically:

  • The original “Add Files” dialog included the ability to only show files that weren’t already checked in. This feature is actually quite useful when adding files to an existing project.
  • The original “Set Working Folder” dialog included the ability to clear the working folder specified for a particular project. This is useful when you have a sub-project set to a specific working folder, and you want it instead to inherit its root working directory from a parent project.

Fortunately, the SourceSafe team left the original dialogs accessible, they’re just hidden away. To get at them, simply hold down the shift key while selecting the corresponding menu item.

Thanks for the tip!! The old working folder dialogue in particular is one that I need.

I also miss the Ctrl+O checkout hotkey.

Yay, this helps with a problem I have that the working folder for a particular subdirectory keeps getting set to the wrong version of the project.  I can re-override it, but that involves navigating through the whole tree again.  This at least resets it to the default, avoiding the navigation.

Now I'll see if I can figure out how it's getting set in the first place.

Oh, that's great! Thanks a lot, I was very upset not being able to clear the working folder of a child project. I just want to leave it to inherit the parent's.

Cool!!!

and more..

if you want to set default working folder for all users, just add to srcsafe.ini following:

[$/MyProject]

Dir = C:\MyProjectFolder

Thanks! I was wondering why when trying to add new files that I was seeing files that were already in the project. Now if I could just make the Shift be the default!

To permanently switch to old style Add dialogs, add this row to srcsafe.ini:

Classic_Dialogs=yes

Excellent - that Add New Files filter thingy dissapearance was really beginning to bug the bejaysus out of me (only just switched from VSS 6 because I rather liked it!). Classic dialogs about to be switched permanently...

Thanks a lot for this tip. I have been in a lot of pain for not being able to unset/clear the working folder.

I don't have the Clear working folder button... When I hold shift, I get the old-style dialog but there's no option to clear the working folder. Any ideas?

I am having a project inwhich 10 sub-projects have working folder set. I am looking for an option from which i dont need to go to each sub project working folder dialog and the working folder got reset.

Thank you so much for this tip.  "To get at them, simply hold down the shift key while selecting the corresponding menu item."

I wasted so much time trying to figure this out.

It seems so simple :)
