No Scatalogical Connotation for Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition

The release of Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition recalls a good laugh we had at one of the very earliest previews given by the ASP.NET team to Microsoft's Most Valuable Professionals.

Scott Guthrie was describing the product that would follow ASP.NET Web Matrix. As you recall, during development, Web Matrix was code-named “Saturn”.

The code name for the follow-up release was going to be “Venus” - now known as Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition.

“Wait a minute,” interrupted an ASP.NET MVP. “Shouldn't the next version be Uranus rather than Venus?“

“True,“ said Scott. “But we didn't think that sounded quite right.“

There was a good laugh as we caught the scatalogical connotation....

  • And don't forget Cassini, the integrated Web server. Cassini is also the name of a space probe. Can you imagine? A probe in Uranus?

  • I have no idea if Venus name came from Scott. As far as I remember, Venus name appeared when we (now Visual Web Developer team) were still part of Visual Basic org, back in spring 2002. We weren't part of ScottGu's org at that time, the reorg happened much later. I believe the name came along with 'Mercury' which was another project in VB at that time. At some point it was popular to use name of planets and yes, I think there was a link between Matrix and the VWD which was in very early stages. I guess I need to ask around :-)
