Giving Windows Home Server a Shot

Like several MVPs, I've been playing with the latest CTP of Windows Home Server. This is an interesting product because it gives home users many of the storage/backup/access benefits that corporations take for granted. It appears to be built on top of Windows Small Business Server with extra bits for remote management and backups.

One thing I'm eager to try is accessing my home system remotely. When I'm at the lakefront home in northern Ontario, I use a HughesNet satellite Internet connection. I'll see whether I can log in to my home network by hooking up a dedicated router to the satellite modem. This should be interesting, given that the IP address is dynamic and there's a fair degree of latency in satellite Internet connections.

I'll post the results in a few weeks when I'm back in Ontario. (I don't control the router here in Victoria, BC so I can't play with the passthrough settings.)

You can get more info from the WHS team's blog if you want to try Windows Home Server for yourself.
