Change WSS/Sharepoint Announcement web part character limit

This always seems to come up each time I work from a default WSS website.

In Sharepoint Designer, navigate to the source of page with Annoucement.

Search for text “Limit Len”

1- Change number after “=” to desired character limit

2- Remove entire property if you would like no character limits.

Is there an alternate way to accompish this without using Designer?  Our company's tech support cuts us off if we tinker with sites using Designer.

I found the forced limit so annoying that I copied all my announcement code into Content Editor webparts and added them to the page, then deleted all Announcements.  I never use them anymore.  Oh, and when I copied the code I deleted all the annoying DIV tags that call up the external style sheets over which I have no control.  Now I can place whatever quantity I want in my new "Announcements' and I don't need to mess with Views to get them to display properly.
