Visual Studio 2005 CTP question...

I was thinking about all the comments, flames, reactions to the delay of Visual Studio "Whidbey" and how it was related to the delay of Sql Server "Yukon".

And now we have the Visual Studio 2005 CTP, that is far from being stable.

Is this a response to all the people that tought that Whidbey was ready for the release (without having any beta at the moment)?

Is this a recent build or an older one, made only to shut up the critics?

I've not an answer for these and other questions, but I think that if this is the current status of Whidbey, perhaps the delay is justified...

What do you think?

Nobody claimed Whidbey was done -- only that it was on track to be done -- except for the silly dependency on Yukon.

Paul I would disagree on two fronts. VS 2k5 would have been beta 1 when Yukon goes Beta 2.

Now if it is a dependancy it appears that the Yukon team will take a Hit to allow the dev tool to catch up by including a 3rd beta (there fore there is at least a beta 2 before the RC process for both platforms)

Although I do agree the way that it was presented to teh world was an affront to most of us.

I have to admit that when they annonced the delay I was pretty ticked off about it. Now that I have my hands on the CTP I can see that it is not as far along as I thought.

The impression I had of Whidbey came from all of the articles and blogs showing off all of the new features. I have to admire people that can work with something in the state that Whidbey is in.

So now I have seen it and I think I'll wait for a more stable release. Imagine what Longhorn must be like.

A lot of misinterpretations exist in names. Yukon may have a "Beta 1" already out, but have you seen it? I have, and I can assure you that its preview or alpha quality in many regards, which is why it isn't a public beta! Whidbey's PDC preview may not be called a "beta", but it was rock solid for the most part. The current CTP is just an internal build in progress to let people demanding to see progress see something, so of course it has some rough edges. So, what's my point? Only that Whidbey by itself was on track for a late 2004 or early 2005 release, whereas Yukon by itself is on track for a mid 2005 release -- end of story. That's not just based on what was said publicly, its also an insider observation based on seeing multiple builds of Whidbey over 1 1/2 years (not just the recent public builds) and the Yukon "beta".

I've also seen the Yukon Beta 1, and what I missed more is being able to use more stable builds. A lot of messages in NGs refer to newer build that have solved a lot of problems or added more features, and not being able to test them is very frustrating...
I also think that the Beta 1 status of Yukon was a little bit unfair...
