Virtual PC Tip

This is probably common knowledge but it just dawned on me after installing Virtual PC for the first time. Make a copy of your Virtual PC Hard Disk before you start installing other software. This allows you to have a clean OS build anytime you want to start over.

I thought of that right after I installed a bunch of test and evaluation programs ... sigh.

What version of VPC are you using? VPC 2004 lets you "discard changes" at the end of session. This is just like making a copy of the .vhd without the time involved in copying a 1GB+ file.

You can also create differencing disks that contain the difference from a base image. So you can create an XP image and then lock that image and you can have X number of other images that use that image as the base. It's kinda hard to figure out where it is at first. I'm sure you can find something with Google if you are interested. I've thought about writing a tutorial about how to do it.

Yeah, I kind of figured this out the same way you did. I then spent a couple of nights while in front of the TV installing every version of the OS since Win95 and burned the base install to a DVD....it has been great ever since to just pick an OS, copy a file and go....getting RH9 and Solaris for x86 to run in 1600x1200 was fun too!
