Making cross domain web requests in asp.net with medium trust enabled
There could be plenty of reason that you might need to do a cross domain web request in your application. One could be let's say you want to divert the resource pressure from your server to some third party content provider like Amazon S3. In my last post I have mentioned a bit about uploading content using WSE to S3 server. I also mentioned about the simple library located at www.codeplex.com/threesharp that does not necessarily require you to work in full trust mode. This is also true if you have a personalized startpage where you want your wideget developers to restrict to partiuclar URLs.

Working out with Amazon S3
Recently, I was bit playing around with amazon S3. This is said to be the cheapest storage for people who don't want to spend much of their brain cells thinking about DB issues. Now, Amazon S3 primarily supports Web service (SOAP) to store and query data out of the S3 server. The concept behind S3 is that you have to create a bucket and under it you can store as many objects you want. Generally for a particular account 100 is the threshold value for buckets. In this post, I will basically focus on configuring your proxy for uploading large files to amazon using WSE and optionally I will point out a cool browser extension for analyzing your S3 space and third party library alternative.

Retrospective of PDC 2008 [From my view]
This happens to be the first PDC for me. This year a lot of new technologies has been unveiled during the keynotes. One of the most focused is the Windows Azure. This happens to be the one stop shop for building and deploying your service oriented application from local to remote. We all know how slow it is to build service oriented application these days and Windows Azure is just the right tool that can make life easier over the course of time. There is a breakout session by Steve Mark that you might like to checkout if you have missed it. The session is a starting point for setting up your first Windows Azure app and it also shows a way to work with Asp.net MVC for things like uploading photos. Also, I found that you can use Azure for building async based queue service easily with asp.net.

LinqExtender 1.4.2 - Supporting Complex type arguments
I just made a quick update to the existing release of LinqExtender. I recently found a bug while building a feature for FlickrXplorer is that if you use constant type query with orderby clause it does pretty well, but it simply does not do well with complex ones. I have used the same logic that I have used for where clause arguments. Also, it will be out of the scope for this post to drill it down all the LinqExtender logic fort hat. But I would put a brief overview on it that can help you out while building your own IQueryable implementation.

Using jQuery to do Ajax Form posts in Asp.net MVC
It is now official from a post by great Scott Guthrie that jQuery is bundled with Asp.net MVC Beta. jQuery is a tiny 15K JavaScript library that contains features from UI tweaks, DOM manipulation to full Ajax control. In my last post, I have shown how to get going with Ajax.Form using Microsoft MVC Ajax library. In this post, I will show how to do Ajax form posts with jQuery but in Ajax.Form style.

Asp.net MVC more Form post scenarios and Ajax
In the flickr explorer app made with Asp.net MVC and Athena, I was trying out some form post scenarios. In this post, I will add few things regarding MVC form post and Ajax that is common to FlickrXplorer but can be used in general.

Deploy, test and pack your code - Part 2 Using MsBuild
In part one of this packing series I have shown, how you can automate your build process, test and optionally mock by using the popular .net deployment tool NAnt. If you don't know what I am talking about and just landed here by help of search engine. Let me put the link below again.

Deploy, test and pack your code - Part 1 Using NAnt
In this part, I show a way to build and deploy your project using NAnt. As, you already might know that NAnt is a tiny deployment tool that enables you to create a deployment package with some *.build files which contains nothing but few XML directives.

Bundle SQL script with build process using MSBuild
We are making a sample application, demo or startup kit or a toolkit with test project that requires some SQL scripts. We generally ship in a readme.txt that says it all. But hey, how about having the script under automated process , like if my SQL Server and VS 2008 is in place, with the click of Ctrl + Shift + B everything gets ready. Here, we will do just right that.

LinqExtender 1.4 - Enhanced object tracking
Its been quite a while since I made any release of the toolkit. I basically, get into user requests, used it myself in LinqToFlickr project and came up with some new features and enhancements.

Athena - A LINQ to flickr API (Release 1.4)
Last week, I released a new version of LINQ.flickr, which I named as Athena from release 1.4. It covers few features from flickr service, also now I have updated it with the latest LINQExtender (pre release version) containing updated Object Tracking Service (OTS) that will enable it to update photos and comments as if like LINQ to SQL.

Making authenticated calls to flickr
There are few things to know , when getting photos from your stream , adding comments and overall doing adding and deletion of your photos. As with flickr you can take a look at this url => http://www.flickr.com/services/api/auth.spec.html for authentication spec to learn more. But with Athena (formerly known as LINQ.Flickr) it's pretty easy to get things going. Last week, I made an update to the FlickrXplorer (The MVC starter project you don't want to miss :-)) project that now enables you to add comments for photos. There is a one click login that will take you to flickr, ask you once for the permission to grant the app for data access and finally will take you back to the place from where you were left off.

Implement Master-Detail layout with ASP.NET MVC
This is the first of posts that I am making to show out the things you can do with ASP.NET MVC. Also, it shows what I have done while building FlickrXplorer. I am bit lazy to write one article for it, so I thought rather to start it here.

Replace SortedDictionary with LINQ query - Part 2 (with comparison)
In my previous post, I have said that using LINQ query instead of SortedDictionary not only could be useful , elegant but also less processor intensive. In this post, I will show you a real comparison between the same the method but one with SortedDictionary and other with LINQ orderby query. I wrote a simple console application that mimics the action of GetSignature in LINQ.Flickr. Here, I will focus only on the sorting part that's why I removed the hashing and initialization of the method.

Replace SortedDictionary with LINQ query
With LINQ.Flickr it is quite necessary to get signature on parameters in order to do authenticated flickr photo get. As with the signature, it has to be sorted by parameter then to be hashed by MD5. Previously, I used to use SortedDictionary dictionary to do so, but thinking a little bit I learned that we actually don't need SortedDictionary anymore after we have LINQ. May be that's why the product team at Microsoft removed SortedDictionary from stripped down version of .net that comes with SilverLight.

Flickr Xplorer - An Asp.net MVC photo app for Flickr
I have flushed out a little project at Codeplex called "Flickr Xplorer". Its a Flickr mesh up that lets you search(user, tag, text), jump into user photos, see popular and latest stream and moreover lets you browse the whole Flickr in hacked url way (url routing easy and rocking). The application is made on Asp.net MVC preview 3 and I have used my LINQ.Flickr to communicate with Flickr. The project is an early stage, I will update with new features when possible and how you ask. You can use it as you like , host it to your server to make it a personal dashboard for your taken photos or use it for fast hand on for Asp.net MVC , mocking and of course how to use LINQ.Flickr API :-)

Mock HTTP layer to do complex tasks like uploading photo to Flickr
In this post, I will show how you can use Typemock to fake out complex HTTP POST like uploading photo in Flickr server. The example which will be shown here, gives a pretty much generic idea of faking out HTTP calls and gain access to the response stream for comparing result with original content.I have used, N-Unit along with Typemock which run thorough TMockRunner.exe to perform the mock test.

LINQ.Flickr 1.3
Just released another version of LINQ.Flickr. The release is out with several bug fixes, code optimization, new feature and overall mocking support. I have used Typemock for the unit test of the product. In coming posts, I will show how powerful mock can be in faking routine like upload photo. But, you can dig it right away, if you go by the release page and download a copy of the product. Truly speaking, testing was never fun for serviced API till mock engine is at my hand.

Code Snippet - A new way to share your codes.
Recently , we have added a new section at dotnetslackers by which you can share your code to public. Now, code snippets are tiny piece of code that can work as a unit, can come handy and be a real time-saver when building up complex solution or can be some interesting piece of lines which in turn can make out someone's day.

Mocking static methods with Typemock
There are mocking tools like Rhino Mock, Moq, NMock, Typemock and many more. Recently, I was kinda evaluating mocking tools to mock out REST calls in Linq.Flickr. Almost all of the mock tools requires some sort of interface reference to work on. While, to mock out methods like XElement.Load or File.Open is impossible with most of the tools, Typemock is one step ahead of others as it supports mocking of static methods.

OpenXML to parse your office documents
ECMA OpenXml is a recognized open standard for saving and retrieving office documents that enables cross-platform document porting and sharing. The Office 2007 uses this format for its data persistence for word, excel and power point lineups. There is a OpenXml SDK CTP available for it to download from MSDN, which lets you create your own office component that works on universal format.

A video article site initiative by dotnetvideos
Few months back Ravi stated a video site http://www.dotnetvideos.net/ at his own initiative. I did registered and today I got a mail from http://www.aspnetpro.com/ that I have got a free 6 month premium account. The concept is that early signup users will be credited with free subscription of aspnetpro account. Though, there are plenty of places to improve but as an singleton initiative, dotnetvideos looks good. I heard from Ravi also that they will be offering a book every week from Apress.com beginning April 2008 for one random user who regularly visits the site.

LINQ.Flickr 1.2
Last week, I have released LINQ.Flickr 1.2 , this new release comes with some bugs fixes requested by community. The best of them was not to be able to search only by user and with specific photo size. The bug started after converting it to use LinqExtender instead of its own query logic. So, now here it is

Kigg, a cool new asp.net MVC application
My good buddy Kazi Manzur Rashid has made out a cool project named Kigg , it looks like DotnetKics but even more powerful than Digg :-) . But its shows a nice way of harnessing the power of MVC (comes as a part of Asp.net 3.5 Extensions).

SQL server compact framework and batch query processing
Recently , I was playing around with my experimental OpenLinqToSql provider to create one tiny tool for Flickr using Linq.Flickr (coming soon) and I came to find out that for some reason the following query does not work in SQL server compact framework , though it is working fine with the SQL server main edition.
