Product Naming Help

We are thinking about turning our issue tracker/ product definition tool into a product this year.

One of our challenges is to decide on a name for it!

We had been using Top 10 Bugs, as it started out primarly as an issue tracker.

It has evolved over the last year to also include ability to define product requirements and track issues all the way though the life cycle of a product.  For example when a supported application has an exception it is transmitted to the tracker and assigned to a developer - The developer can view the exception info, and resolve the issue.

Names we are considering...

Keeping “Top 10 Bugs“ even though it does more....

“Not Just Bugs“ since it does more than just track bugs :)

What would you call it? If we use your suggested name (that's different than above I will gladly send you a nice company shirt!)

I worked at a software company and we paid a handsome sum to a market research firm to look into this very type of issue.

They told us to look for names that are one word , even if it is a compound word. The word should be easy to spell, or cleverly spelled so as to stick out in a persons mind and make them remember the term (example: spell integrate as 'ntagr8'). You wanna avoid the tired old prefixes like 'e' or 'i', also avoid techy words like technology, system, electronic and such.

If i was naming a product like what you have described I would maybe pick from a list of a few that are catchy. Some ideas

LifeBlood
(plays on life cycle management)
Extermin8
(killing bugs -You could also put some marketing legs on the 8)
Quality Assured
(Since this type of product is a function of quality assurance)

Oh well, just some ideas. The name really has to fit with your corporate persona. Good Luck.

Hey Mr. Dave,

I had some ideas that should capture the essence of a documentation tool. Shoot the messager, documentation is done last, etc.

Here's my (slouchy) attempts:

The Bad News Bearer - Retro-nostalgia harkening to the movie "The Bad News Bears" - the scruffy team that stunk er.. could.

Empty Perfection - A cynical description of how it's most likely to be used (and interpreted by management).

Roach Raconteur - well, it is a bug tracker. Nice alliteration too.

My First Feature - look mommy, I made a bug! Good for Jr. developers.

Same Difference - Product requirements, bugs... same thing really.

Mmm.. maybe I'll come up with others later.

Nah.

BugMan (Bug Manager)

I know it's cheesy - but I had to type it :)

It reminds me of Batman - a lonely superhero fighting scum to make the world a better place.

BugMan - a lonely software program (most people hate to debug) fighting bugs to make the world a better place.

The name also implies that it does more than just list bugs - it *manages* defects throughout the whole process.

Yes - and when you ship it - please let me know. I usually do my bug-tracking with yellow sticky notes :)
