Can't Sync Outlook 2003 with your Pocket PC?

Having said problem?  Go get ActiveSync 3.7  Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824116 (I found this KB article while looking for something else, but thought it would be useful to pass on)

You Receive Error Messages When You Synchronize Your Pocket PC with Outlook 2003

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager
  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002
  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to synchronize your Pocket PC with Outlook 2003, items that are in your Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks may not be synchronized to your Pocket PC, and you may receive the following error message:
Synchronization cannot start because this desktop computer cannot access necessary information. Restart this desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problem persists and this desktop computer is running Microsoft Outlook 2000, open Outlook 2000, click Help, and then click Detect and Repair. Otherwise, contact your network administrator.
Additionally, you may receive the following warning several times during the synchronization process:
An external application is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook.
Do you want to allow this?

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are using Microsoft ActiveSync 3.6 or earlier with Outlook 2003.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must update your copy of Microsoft ActiveSync to version 3.7 or later. ActiveSync is available for download at the following Microsoft Web site:

Just got off the phone with HP support. They state that their iPAQ Pcoket PC h1945 does not currently support Active Sync (any version) with Microsoft Outlook 2003. No date for support was given.

Make sure your account is not connecting to an exchange server in cached exchange mode. This will cause problems with most if not all PDAs

I had Activesync 3.7.1 and it would give error message at each sync attmept on Toshiba e330 Pocket PC. I changed back to ver 3.5 and still get same error. I have discovered that sync works OK when I only sync the inbox to include up to 6 days of mail. When I try to sync more than 6 days the error occurs. How can I get past this? With previous version of Outlook I could sync two weeks or more of inbox.

I have also upgraded to 3.7.1. I was not syncing the Inbox at all, and I'm getting the same message. On the off-hand chance it might work, I told it to Sync last 5 days of mail. No joy.

Experienced similar symptoms: no sync of calendar, contacts & tasks after upgrading from office xp to 2003.

Using 3.7.1

Downloaded and reinstalled current version of activesync (3.7.1) and the problem resolved.

I have ActiveSync 3.7.1. My existing contacts are not coming over from my Office 2003 Outlook to my Compaq IPAQ 3600. If I create a new contact, that will come over. Any ideas? What is the phone number for support? Thanks, Bruce.

If I sync with outlook open all of the tracked notes, mail, phone conversations in the Accounts in the Business management are erased and my inbox emails are in that area.

I've got a Toshiba e755, Activesync 3.7.1 and Outlook 2003. One day the sync just failed to connect to Calendar/Contacts/Tasks, with Activesync coming up with the message "Action Required" against each of these.

Tried uninstalling & reinstalling Activesync 3.7.1, turning the PC off - but nothing works.

Any ideas?

I found a way of fixing the problem on my PC, you will need the copy of Office 2003 - select Help, Detect and Repair, then select the second option "discard my customised settings and restore factory defaults- this will clear the registry for a complete refresh of the program - when reloaded/repaired select the HTTP email option then enter a Hotmail email account. Hope this helps
