Express SKU Support

I have recently uploaded TestDriven.NET 2.5 Beta. This version now supports all versions of Visual Studio .NET including the Express SKU. To activate TestDriven.NET when using an Express edition simply ensure that the 'Properties' tool window is visible and click on any node in the 'Solution Explorer'. You should see a 'TestDriven' property which shows the version of TestDriven.NET you are using when the extension is active.

You can download this version from here.

TestDriven.NET has been designed to work with C#, VB, C++ and J# Express. Visual Web Developer Express is not yet supported. I'm hoping to add support for this and Visual Studio 2005 'Web Site' projects in a future version.

That sounds really cool - but didn't that get you in trouble last time?

yeh -- i was wondering the same thing. I knew someone got in trouble for hacking express to make add-ons work... and i see now that it was *you*...

so what shakes Jamie?

You worried that billg and a suite of armed gangsters will turn up on your door and pepper you with bullets?

I'm just left a little bemused by how Microsoft chose to handle it.

# re: Express SKU Support

License issues aside, given that MS is putting test tools in Orcas Professional (and higher SKUs), what are your plans?

it has been a long while since i have used any programming software but im going to get this for the reason that I think your right. i was on the digg site and was reading through all the published e-mails.

# re: Express SKU Support

Same here, i got here through digg.com I also read the e-mail sequence... and let me tell you what I think... I think that there was no case... and you were right on seeking legal advice with your friend. I noticed in every mail that Jason sent wasn't concrete but evasive... not really stating the sitch in all of that dilemma. I was also taken aback on the way it was been handled from their side... I also noticed how jerky Jason was on his mail and responding reflects. Got to admit, there were some words of friction... and friction pushers from them, I admire the way you stood up and how you handled it, but there was a time when it came to much b.s. and you were this close to engage in battle. Oh, and the part that pissed me off the most was the whole MVP status... how you were de-MVP-ed... and when THEY finally got back on your MVP from Mark's Vicky after such a long time [into the whole dilemma] saying that you have been nominated to get the MVP status with them... and then shortly getting the RECALL... gee, what's up with that?! That's really messed up! I understand what you went through, and if you are still going through that. I recently have a situation quite similar... after giving years of service [UNPAID] ... now trying to annihilate me from the programs. In conclusion, Good luck on everything you do. And hope this gets solved right! Regards, -Requiem Hanaag

Oh, yeah I almost forgot... ... and that line on THEIR last mail: "...and I will have to turn this over to the lawyers. I really hope it does not come to that." really shows that they've been trying to avoid the matter to that degree... there are lots of more statements that puts them on the line... but I chose to put this one since it's the last one so far and also because it pisses me off when the phrase is said... and because that is also the last thing I heard from the people in the programs I was working with. Waiting to hear from your updates soon, -Requiem Hanaag

Isn't this working around the technical limitations in Visual Studio Express which try to stop you installing add ons?

# re: Express SKU Support

What surprises me most is not that they did it - Microsoft is consistently bully-ish in their deals with others - but that they let you keep a paper trail of their intimidation tactics. This used to be said in parks or golf courses, "Nice add-on you have, chap. It would be a shame if something bad happened to your company".

You are a competitor to them, in the sense you provide functionality that is seen to drive revenue away from their high-cost SKUs.

If I were you, I would start paying more attention to strange objects under your car or anything fishy about your brakes ;-)

Jason Weasel Weber is an obnoxious marketing underling, no matter his crafted, yawn-inducing job title.  He writes like a used-car salesman who parrots whatever bullshit from above he is told to say.

Enough with his self-serving, PR-spun e-mails!  Just give that lying suck-up the finger he deserves.

Microsoft Legal has NOTHING on you, and THEY KNOW IT.  So, you're being served FUD.  Typical.

Know that we are ALL behind you.  What's the best response to FUD-slinging?  MEDIA ATTENTION!!!  Every time they send you another bullshit-filled scare letter, tell your story to another media outlet.

LET THE WORLD KNOW EXACTLY HOW MICROSOFT HAS TREATED YOU!

You have the David-versus-Goliath story that SELLS COPY!  Run with it!!!

careful, they are stalling you so they can get their own product out and cut your market. interesting, i've never really met an ms-goon, but here one is. be strong.

# re: Express SKU Support

As Jason Weber stated, he's a dev and not a lawyer.  A lot of people nail him for being evasive yet it's not his job or right to comment on legal specifics.

We see all the commentary between Jamie and Jason yet we never see a single legal doc.  I believe I read that Jamie was slammed with many legal documents.  Where are they?  THOSE should be the none evasive docs.  If they aren't then MS failed to act on this.

Did MS ever contact Jamie's lawyer?  What's going on behind the scenes?

# re: Express SKU Support

Oops, I see the legal docs now.  They basically sum up the correspondences and they sum up what MS INTENDED for the EULA and they make reference to a specific section.

"You may not work around any technical limitations".

Have you?  It doesn't sound like you have.  If that's all they have then they have nothing.  It seems Jason is still hung up on the idea that you revered engineered.

# re: Express SKU Support

Oh man, what a depressing, yet intriguing paper trail you had with MS. Kudos for holding your ground. Of course, I have no idea whether or not you're in the right. "You may not work around any technical limitations" is apparently quite easily enforcable in the US with DMCA, and there's a similar EU directive as well, although in Finland we just got a nice verdict about DVD decryption, stating that circumvention is illegal only if a measure needs is "effective", whatever that means. But it could be a case for just having a single bit somewhere not being sufficient to be counted as an efficient technical limitation. But then again there are the MS licenses that can of course throw extra spanners in the works.

Makes me ever so glad to be working fully on open source products, tools, and platforms. It just seems ridiculous that some entity can just forbid you to do good things to the community. As Larry Lessig and others have said, innovation comes from sharing, not ownership.

Good luck with your ordeal!

# re: Express SKU Support

I'd like to thank u for this product, I've downloaded the free edition & It helps a lot.

I hope u'll not be charged anyway for this action.

Microsoft is a pure commercial company(money before anything including science & community).

While developers, a lot of them, are targeting science, and community before money.

I'm using VC# Express (the first useful free tool from Microsoft) beside other free open source software.

I feel too bad towards Microsoft for disabling important features that can help developers to do better job.

I appreciate that they want to sell their products to gain more money, but they r already selling alot, they r not harmed anyway.

No need or meaning to be SOOO greedy & selfish while we r talking about a science.

It's a scientific work at the end, isn't called computer science or software engineering.

There are budget-limited developers who want to learn more & do great job for themself & community.

But, Micorosft can't understand this concept. May be they think that people who create free software are crazy.

On the contrary, Microsoft gained a great future & reputation that, I see, they don't deserve.

I never liked any product for them (expect C#) & I hate being a developer with Microsoft tools.

I hoped to quit the MS side and jump into java & linux side. But unluckly time is not suitable anymore.

Any OS is more stable than Windows. Any free software is more stable than any Microsoft product & less demanding for resources.

I won't deny that they did a great role be making everyone able to use computers & internet (including me).

But, they spoiled the science & the market by letting anyone be a developer through their wizards & next to finish.

Sorry for being chatty, english isn't my native language (arabic is mine), so I needed alot of lines to express :)

Good luck & nice work.
