Reflector Add-In + Reflector 3.3.1.0

If anyone has tried using the Reflector Add-In with the latest version of Reflector, they will have found that the automatic download isn't working.  Reflector's download location and public key changed recently causing it to break.  I'm sorry I haven't released an update sooner.  I've been rather distracted with a complete rewrite of the Managed Add-Ins framework.  At some point you can expect a leaner, meaner add-in machine.  For the moment I've got a fixed version of the Reflector Add-In for you (plus source).  Unfortunately something in Reflector has changed causing it to stop working inside VS.NET 2002 (I imagine most people are using 2003 now anyway).  If you have any idea what the problem is please let me know!

The following ZIP contains source and binaries for the Reflector Add-In.  Because I don't distribute Reflector with it, you will find that it won't compile strait away.  The first time it runs, it will download Reflector and do some binding redirects on its .config file.  After this you should find that it compiles.  To run it for the first time do the following...

  1. Download and install ManagedAddIns-1.0.33.msi.
  2. Replace the '\Program Files\ManagedAddIns\AddIns\ReflectorAddIn' with Reflector Add-In + Source
  3. Launch VS.NET 2003 and select 'Tools\Managed Add-Ins..\ReflectorVSAddIn'.
  4. Use the automatic Reflector download

Could you comment here if my instructions are okay and it works (or more importantly if it doesn't)?

  • ah...doesn't work for me. Since I don't know how to let Managed Add-Ins to work with already installed Reflector, it has never worked for me, unfortunately.

  • To get already installed applications to work with Managed Add-Ins do the following...

    1) Open the 'Add-Ins Toolbox' (you can find this on the 'Tools' menu).

    2) Resize it so that it is reasonable size.

    3) You can now drop EXE files onto the list (or copy their path onto the address bar).

    4) Right click on the new add-in and select 'Connect'.

This should bring up the new add-in in a tool window.

If this doesn't work could you let me know exactly how far you get? Gool luck...

  • I think your assumption that most people are using VS2003 might be a bit optimistic. Many major .NET projects kicked-off long before the 1.1 release and may not upgrade anytime soon.... I see it all the time and it drives me nuts, but big orgs have their own rythm and there isn't much we can do about it.

  • I recently "lost" my Reflector add-in from VS2003. Attempts to reinstall it (from ManagedAddIns-1.0.33.msi) have been fruitless. ManagedAddIns appear in the Add In Manager but neither the Managed Add-Ins or Add-In Toolbox... menu selections appear. I'm about ready to uninstall VS and start over again. Any help of direction would be greatly appreciated, as I really liked having Reflector available from within VS.

By the way, the NUnit Add-in is working just fine!

  • I'll see if I can get it working with the latest version. I'm sorry I haven't released anything for a while. Keep proding me and I might release something... ;)

  • I was struggling with getting Reflector 3.4.6.0 with Managed Add-Ins, but then I read here that you can go to the Add-Ins Toolbox and add an arbitrary .EXE. So I was able to add Reflector 3.4.6.0's REFLECTOR.EXE.

The upside is that Reflector is in a pane of VS.NET. The downside is that it's not fully integrated, such as in the context menu.

  • why I can't download Reflector Add-In + Reflector 3.3.1.0 and manageaddin

  • The Reflector Add-In functionality is now part of TestDriven.NET. This makes it much easier for me to maintain. The old add-in is now obsolete.
