Internet Information Services (IIS) uses 4 decision points for the site bindings. They are the protocol, port, IP and host header. This video lesson walks through the bindings and shows how each one is used.

The command line is still with us, in fact is some ways it’s stronger than ever. Sometimes it may be necessary to capture the command line output. This short video covers 3 tricks to capturing the command line output.

Three tricks for capturing command line output
Ever need to troubleshoot DNS related issues? Nslookup is the tool for you, and today I cover how to use this powerful little tool, along with some real-world examples.
This is part 3 of a 52 Web Pro Series for the web administrator. Previous walkthroughs include:
Week 1 – Ping and Tracert
Week 2 – Understanding DNS zone records

I’ll call this a “201 level” walkthrough although I haven’t decided yet how I’ll classify each week’s video. This doesn’t require too much previous knowledge but it does move quickly and digs into DNS quite a bit—at least as much as can be done in about 10 minutes.
Today I cover DNS Zone Records , part 2 of a 52 week series on a number of web technology related topics. This is a “Level 101” video, covering what A, CNAME, MX, TXT records are, as well as the difference between a DNS Client and Server, and DNS wildcards.
If you missed last week’s opening lesson on troubleshooting using the Ping and Tracert tools, be sure to check it out. All future videos can be found on the Web Pro Series landing page.
I must admit, I have a hard time keeping it within 10 minutes. In fact, it’s still just over 11 minutes. I recorded reverse DNS records (PTR records) and some deeper dives into the zone files but had to cut it stay within my 10 minute goal. I guess after a few videos I’ll learn to be more concise and hope to fit more within the same time period.

To start off the new year, today I’m starting a series of walkthrough videos which I plan to publish weekly for the duration of 2011. I’ve wanted to create some walkthroughs on a few technologies for a while now, so here I am, committing myself to a year worth.
Whether you’re an IT Pro, a hobbyist, or a web developer wanting to stay abreast of the admin side, I hope to cover content for you.
My goal is 10 minutes or less per video, making them quick and easy to watch, and I hope to provide various gold nuggets of information throughout the walkthroughs that offer additional value.
Topics planned include: troubleshooting essentials, ARR and load balancing, URL Rewrite, SQL syntax for the IT pro, scripting, command line basics, IIS Shared Configuration, keyboard shortcuts and more. I expect to jump back and forth between levels of difficulty to keep things mixed up.
Today I’m starting with a “Level 101” session on two basic but essential troubleshooting tools—ping and tracert. These lay the foundation for many deeper troubleshooting videos in the future.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you find these helpful, the right length and technical detail. I’m sure the first few will be pretty rusty but it’s all part of the growing process.
You can get a full list of all of videos for this series from the Web Pro Series landing page.
