The “secret” new Windows in Microsoft Research or incubation

Microsoft seems to be preparing a new version of ‘Windows’ other than Windows 7 (or different operating system, or well, something pretty different as we know OS these days:)). It is also supposed to be part of the ‘Microsoft 2.0’ idea, sounds familiar? :).`

The project appears to be ‘secret’ yet and its code name is Midori. Midori will be a new Internet-centric operating system, based on the idea of connected systems that largely eliminates the dependencies between local applications and the hardware they run on. It would provide an overall "connectedness" between applications and devices which makes sense for the future of cloud computing and on-demand services.

It will represent a "major paradigm shift" for Windows users and be no easy task for Microsoft to pull off, said Andrew Brust, chief of new technology for the consulting firm Twentysix New York.

Though he has not been briefed by Microsoft on Midori, Brust said the idea makes sense because Microsoft needs to drastically update Windows to stay current with new business models and computing paradigms that exist today -- particularly to help the company compete against Google on the Web.

Personally, I agree with these thoughts and it also makes sense with the approach of Software+Services.

Well, maybe the next question for all the early adopters is when it is going to be available. Answer: we have to wait, I found that Midori is in incubation, which means it is a little closer to market than most Microsoft Research projects, but not yet close enough to be available in any kind of early preview form. Others say we are five years far or more.
