Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server

Natty Gur blogged abaut the “Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server.” Error.

Open your Internet Information Services manager and from the [your machine]/Web Sites/ Default Web Site node select the virtual folder which stores your project. Right Click and select Properties to select the ASP.NET tab page. Make sure the correct version ASP.NET Version is selected.

I have VS.NET 2003 and 2005 beta 1 running side-by-side on my box and noticed ASP.NET Version 2.0 is targeted by default, even for VS.NET 2003 projects.

Thanks a lot for this tip, I looked at the IIS application properties and completely failed to notice the new ASP.NET tab.

It was nice of the VS.NET 2005 beta (I suspect that the .NET 2.0 Framework is to blame) installation not to inform us that it changed all the existing ASP.NET 1.1 web applications too. :/

Suzy: You'll have to select the appropriate ASP.NET version for each application through the steps described above. As soon as you install VS.NET 2005/.NET Framework 2.0 it defaults to the 2.0 runtime environment.

I tried the suggested solution and it didn't work for me.

I then went into the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot folder and removed everything (you may need to do a restart before being able to do this)and started a project from scratch. I ensured that the project was set to use ASP.NET 1 as opposed to 2 (in IIS) and it worked.

The thing that was causing the problem for me was that there was a web XML config file in the wwwRoot folder that was trying to redirect evreything to .NET version 2.0. I moved it to a separate folder to test that everything else still worked ok before deleting it. Another thing to check is that the default website setting is only applied to new projects (i assume) and so for existing projects you will need to change the properties in IIS specifically for that project. Hope this may be of some help to someone.

With regard to the post where i said that i removed everything from the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot folder, please note that the only file i actually deleted was the web XML config file. I restored all the other files after i had rectified the problem, as you need them for IIS to function correctly.

Ok. Now for those who dont have Asp.Net tab in Virtual Directory Settings of IIS. Do the Following:

cd %WINDOWS_DIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\%ASP.NET_VERSION%\

aspnet_regiis.exe -e

aspnet_regiis.exe -r

aspnet_regiis.exe -i

This essentially ends up doing the same thins as the new tab.

Cheers Mate. This Blog Rocks :D

Cheers,

This is a gotcha if you are normally developing in 2.0 and point IIS back to an old 1.1 Site.

I am glad that I don't have to deal with 1.1 every day any more.

My special thanks to MB!!!! (my thanks to Paul for his blog that lead me to reading MB's comments, because I knew about the ASP.NET tab).

Removing the web.config in wwwroot has cleared the problem in 1.1. Now I also understand the issue with Unrecognized attribute 'xmlns'. It was obvoius IIS was trying to use 2.0, but why... only MS can explain why that ribbish is there. So what will hapen with 3.0? God help us!

I got this same error message but resolved the issue a little differently. I'm running IIS 6.0 which doesnt have an ASP.Net tab.

- I clicked on the "Directory" tab and then clicked the "Configuration" button towards the bottom of the tab.

- The click on the "Debugging" tab and make sure the "Enable ASP server-side script debugging" checkbox is checked.

The solution I found is ...

Just unregister Dotnet framework 2.0

Register Dotnet framework 1.1 again.

by aspnet_regiis -i

Thats It!

I have done all seen all and MY PROBLEM STILL FREAKING EXISTS.

I have gone through site after site - to look for a solution : did all of the security tabs.. Windows Authent.. etc.. Asp.NEt Tab - an obvious - I am running VS2003 Only but have NET2.0 / Net 3.5 installed .. b/c I have sharpDevelop installed. This worked at one time and now it does not... I tried the iis reset magic with -e, -r, -i

I reinstalled VS2003 .. and now I think I will reinstall Inet services...

I feel like someone zapped my computer .. strange thing - I can use my laptop and debug with VS 2005 but the VS2003 I cannot.. so I figured OK we will just install on the desktop and try it .. NUTS!! someone got any ideas that were not listed in the 1000's of post I see here..

if VS2003 is anly installed and you still getting the problem, then go to IIS-><your virtual directory>-

ok if you're still reading the blogs it means u have not found the solution, this is what worked for me:

1- Open ISS manager, go to virtual dir, then properties.

2- Click on ASP.NET tab, and then remove

3- Click create, then ok

4- restart your iis. restart your computer

5- umplugg your pc.

6- open your window and toss it out, making sure that your copy of windows doesnt ever run again.

7- BUY A LINUX ENABLED COMPUTER !!!

8- write a letter to microsoft to let them know how bad their support, software, and everything else they do.

9- as an alternative you can change careers into holistic medicine or something !

10 - LOL this wont fix the problem but surely will get a smile out of you so you can keep searching and wasting your life with micosoft products !
