Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet

The weekend is great for easy reading so here goes.

I am writing this while removing the crapware from my new Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet. This Thursday I placed my order at Bluelink (a Dutch Lenovo (IBM) specialist) and received it the next day. Final spec. Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz, 2.5GB, 12.1” Multiview/MultiTouch XGA (1024x768) TFT, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, Intel 965 Express Chipset, 120GB (5400 rpm), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4-cell battery, etc. Since I travel more frequently I need a compact and low weight notebook. My company supplies me with an excellent 15” Thinkpad but I never bother carrying it around. Besides 15” notebooks and European airlines don’t mix well.

It took me quite some time to make up my mind what new hardware to select. As an early adopter I have developed this love-hate affair with Vista. The numerous crashes of Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007 kill my productivity.  The biggest disappointment is the 15-20% performance decrease with my NVidia 7800 GTX which has completely stopped me from playing PC games. I seriously considered a MacBook (pro), and if Steve would have released a stable version of Leopard, and announced a release date for his ultra thin or tablet MacBook I would have taken the plunge. It would have been priceless to see the faces of my audience while presenting a Microsoft oriented talk on an Apple. It was time to move on so I decided in favor of the X61.

I am extremely curious how your first experiences are with this lenovo tablet. I'm thinking about getting one myself.

Do we get a review soon?

Cheers!

I just got mine from Lenovo as well, I've put Ubuntu on it. Even though its very ultraportable, the 8-cell battery makes it heavy. I'm thinking about getting a 4cell. I see that you have a 4-cell battery, what kind of use do you get out of it per charge? Mine lasts about 4-5 hours, I think, even though I've never used it for a continous period from charge to dead.

Still curious for the review. The Dell ltitude tablet is out but I'm still doubting. The Dell cost around 2500 euro...

I recently got the same machine, after having begged for a Tablet for almost two years at my previous employer (Ordina). Now that I co-own a company, I get to make that decision myself :).

I don't care much for the big iron, because I spend most of my time designing and doing Proof of Concepts. Big iron IMHO is mostly interesting to full-time developers. More importantly, I think I get a productivity gain from the tablet, because I don't have to get pen and paper. What's more, after I've sketched or annotated something, I can email it to the rest of the team immediately, without wasting paper (we have to think about the enviroment, right?).

So far, I'm loving it. When I really need a lot of sceen realestate I hook up an external monitor.

I also look forward to doing whiteboard sessions without a whiteboard :).

With the 2-cell I get 2-3 hours and with the 8-cell I get 5-6 hours. Enough for a workday ;)

Same here Michiel I'm enjoying my thinkpad very much. I did apply a screen protector though. After the first day of good use I noticed a few scratches. Also I feel that with the screen protector I don't have to be that careful anymore.

I got the X61 tablet with Vista Ultimate and after about 10 blue screens of death in the first two weeks, ordered and installed the XP CD's.  But it's charm as a tablet PC is totally wasted on XP.  Handwriting recognition is so much better in Vista.  So now that SP1 is back, I'm having another attempt at installing Vista.  I got a spare drive so I can do my Vista experiment and swap back if needed.  I suspect all the blue screens are due to Thinkpad drivers, so I will uninstall the ones I don't absolutely need and hope it makes Vista stable.
