PDC08 Day One Keynote Scoop

After a good night of sleep and a short walk we landed in the PDC keynote. A first impression of Ray Ozzie's big message, which comes down to the externalization of IT through high end services on the web tier. Windows Azure is Microsoft's new web tier offering as Windows in the cloud. Services that run on a vast number of machines in Microsoft data centers. It'll be released as a CTP as of today. High scale, most availability, most economical way of mixing and matching services in ways that you find useful. SQL Services in the cloud. Workflow services, authorization services and identity federations services. Synchronized storage and synchronized apps. Dynamic CRM and SharePoint will also fill a very important role in the overall Windows Azure platform. Microsoft is betting big on online branded services for business.

What makes Windows Azure special? Scalable hosting through hypervisor technology and multiple levels of security. Windows Azure is an operating system for the cloud. Automated service management through separating the app from the underlying operating system. It enables you to model your services with roles and groups, channels and endpoints, interfaces and configuration settings. High availability through relying on highly available service blocks. Rich developer experience through skills transfer meaning that all current developer tools in the developer platform will facilitate Windows Azure developer.
