TechEd Done and the Atlas mashup demo
Tuesday, August 29, 2006 10:58 PM

TechEd in Australia is done for another year. Boy am I tired after all that. Satisfied but tired. Tatham Oddie and myself did a presentation on how to build an Atlas mashup using some local aussie content. It was the last session on the last day and went pretty well I think.

You can have a look at the mashup we built here ( http://usergroups.it/ ). It currently allows you to locate almost every user group in Australia or New Zealand by either panning around the map, or by using the text search functionality. Pressing search with no search criteria will list all the usergroups we have in the database. There are not a lot in the Aus/NZ region currently.

Clicking on a search result will cause the map to pan over to the area where that user group is located.

Each usergroup is highlighted using pushpins on the map. Hovering over a pushpin will display a popup with the usergroups web address and an 'Add To Live' button. Clicking on the 'Add to Live' button will cause the details of that usergroup to be added to your Windows Live account as a gadget. The gadget displays the usergroup venue details as well as details of the next meeting if an RSS feed is available for the usergroup.

The full source code for the mashup used in the presentation can be downloaded here.

Also, if you just want to look at the services that were used for managing the user group data and which are publicly, they can be used from http://usergroups.it/WebServices/usergroupdata.asmx

TechEd Australia Interviews
Friday, August 18, 2006 5:11 PM

A post or two ago I mentioned that I would be interviewing some prominent people in the industry while they are at TechEd in Australia for future ASP.NET podcats. So far, the responses have been overwhelming. Because you probably can't see the sarcasm in my typing, that means I received zero suggestions for questions.

So as one final plea, if you have any questions you'd like me to ask the following people a quesiton on your behalf, please post a comment or mail me direct at glav @ aspalliance.com

Normally, I'd come up with questions but a lot of the time, people always mention I should have asked this question or that question, hence why I am putting it out there.

The people I will be interviewing are:

1. Scott Guthrie - needs no introduction but.....General Manager in the Microsoft Developer Division
2. George Moore - General Manager of Windows Live development Platform
3.
Jorke Odolphi - Product Engineer for WebCentral
4. Eric Diely - IIS Program Manager
5.
Keith Smith - Senior product manager, Web platforms and tools

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 10:07 AM

Wally has done another webcast around Atlas. He also calls it a podcast although its not really. Maybe we could call it a podwebcast, or a webpodcast, or a poddedwebcast or a....... ahh bugger it. Its a video about Atlas stuff. Great for learning about a very valuable feature of the Atlas framework.

Goto: http://aspnetpodcast.com/CS11/blogs/asp.net_podcast/archive/2006/08/11/493.aspx

You can view the webcast directly there or download and watch it at your convenience.  Source code for this is available for download at the link.  Enjoy

Questions from listeners for upcoming Podcast interviews.
Thursday, August 10, 2006 5:10 PM

As part of TechEd 2006 in Sydney Australia, I am lucky enough to have been given some time with some key presenters to do a podcast interview(s). Have a look at the list of people I'll be interviewing at TechEd below. If you have any questions that you'd like me to specifically ask any one of them, I'd love to hear from you, and I'll pass it onto the resepctive individual when I am interviewing. The list of people I am interviewing is:

1. Scott Guthrie - needs no introduction but.....General Manager in the Microsoft Developer Division
2. George Moore - General Manager of Windows Live development Platform
3.
Jorke Odolphi - Product Engineer for WebCentral (Update!)
4. Eric Diely - IIS Program Manager
5.
Keith Smith - Senior product manager, Web platforms and tools

As you can see, some fairly high profile people in there. Should be some fun interviewing them and I hope to see some interesting questions from readers out there.

PasswordStrength Extender control available via latest Atlas Control Toolkit Release
Thursday, August 3, 2006 11:53 AM

A little while ago, I posted about a new Atlas extender control I was developing called the PasswordStrength extender. This control utilised the Atlas Control Toolkit as a foundation from which to build. A number of people asked when this control would be released to the public, and I am proud to say that it has finally been released as one of the new components available with the Atlas Control Toolkit.

As Shawn Burke points out in his blog, this release of the Atlas Control Toolkit is the first release to contain non-Microsoft contributed components. Specifically the PasswordStrengthExtender by myself, and the FilteredTextBox by Christian Wenz. Its pretty cool to work with the Microsoft guys on this and its great being able to contribute something to such a widely used community library. I really look forward to adding more controls into this great project.

By the way, the Atlas Control Toolkit now contains something like 21 controls to play with. There are some awesome new controls in their which make 'Atlas'-izing your applications super easy.

Download and enjoy!

The book is almost out!
Tuesday, August 1, 2006 1:38 PM

Yes, its almost here. The "Beginning AJAX in ASP.NET" book is ready for release. Wally points out that an advert for the book appeared on the Amazon home page which is kinda cool, and for a first time author, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Its that time folks. This book has it all. Drama, Action, Romance and Mystery and fun for the whole family. Not only is it time to buy yourself a book (or three), but perhaps copies for friends, family, and some backup copies in case they lose those.  [:D]

You can order it from here
