Popup or not popup that is the question
I hate pop ups, so as surely many of you now, I installed the Google bar with the popup blocker.

But one issue is coming now. I have some web projects where after a login page, I need to open the main window full screen without the menu bar or any decorations.

I am puzzled now how I am going to fix my Javascript code because obviously my legitimate new window has been considered legitimately by Google bar as a popup !

So what I am supposed to do now ? Very annoying, because of course I can click on Ctrl to open my new window, but what's about the users ? It make things complicated.

Including the fact that this feature will be part of the next IE, and i believe activate by default. I would like to see a little bit of intelligence in the behavior of these pop up blockers. Like for example that if a window.open is called from the same site, it consider this as perfectly valid.
I know a lot of webtools working with full opened windows, I wonder how they will fix this.

Any ideas ?

SVG fun example
Well it's not really Picasso, but it is the proof you can make something with SVG other than pie-charts !

[CMS] dScribe new version soon

The next version of dScribe will be release in few hours.

This version will be the first Beta (following the three alpha versions already released).

A lot of things has been done recently, so I would like just to mention this:

  • dScribe will now be multi projects. Yes you can handle with this tool multiple websites from one place.
  • I implemented a Setup page to configure the basic settings dScribe need (admin name, passwords, servers, etc...)
  • Deployment function will be now operational. So you would be able to define 3 types of servers, Development, Test, and Production.
  • Some nice features for an Admin role, like the way to Start/Stop a site, managing an error page, etc..

And of course the usual bugs fixed ;-)

I will also publish another article (the eight now if I'm right) where I will talk about editing and approval process.

Finally if you have some comments and want to implement something I forgot, let me know !

Popup user control with Drag and Drop

UPDATE: now that Tomas has released a new version I suggest that you use his control  Read more here ;-)

I really like the Popup control Tomáš Petrícek created and published on codeProject.

I love the idea to have my little popup window coming and disappearing automatically, and also the gradient idea.

But for a small project, I need a drag&drop feature. So I know Tomas is busy on the next version, but I couldn't wait further more. I needed to implement the idea for a glossary window, you know you click on some word, and automatically a popup coming with some dictionary explanations.

So I included in his control this feature, so now the popup can move along the window.

This is actually a first version, fully functional, but I expect of course some improvements, or maybe the one Tomas should release.

I expect to implement a trigger in the user control to enable or disable the draganddrop feature.

The Drag and Drop Javascript code is cross browser done (NS and IE). Of course I will appreciate your comments on this and again thanks to Tomas for this very nice idea.

By the way this is working as DHTML so google popup blocker will never catch up this 'fake' window ;-)

Google creators blogs

This time it's not Google blogging but their creators Larry Page and Sergey Brin *.

I like their introduction ;-)

Together we have a web site called "Google". It reunites visitors with "that page they saw yesterday but can't remember the address of".

And now we have a web log.

I laughed at this post:

I got dinner with Bill Gates tonight. He wants to buy us out with 5 copies of MS Flight Simulator 2004. I told him we can talk about it. But I want a Microsoft joystick thrown in as well!

Come on Bill it's your turn now to blog ;-))

* Of course just in case you don't know this page is a thanksgiving joke done by Google ;-)

Digger for your smartphone

Lutz Roeder, the excellent writer of Reflector, had written a game for smartphone, Digger:

Digger is a game for Smartphone 2003. The goal is to collect a given number diamonds and exit the level without getting hit by stones or ghosts. The status line tells you the level, number of lives, diamonds you collected and how many you need to collect. Press "*" to continue after you died. "#" will exit the program.

The Curse and Blessings of Dynamic SQL

An SQL text by Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP.

Erland has also posted an interesting list of articles

Texts on SQL

This is a small collection of texts about some features in SQL Server that people frequently ask about in the newsgroups about MS SQL Server. Rather than being a FAQ with many questions with short answers, these are in-depth articles on some of my favourite topics
