Apple innovation is losing grounds very fast

Apple's hyped event today is a real disappointment! Nothing new there, just few upgrades on the iPod range, maybe a wireless TV box (not really a novelty).

This is the second time in a row this year Steve Jobs create a 'not to miss' event with finally little delivering. Where is the innovation? I know well Apple since 1977 and it's really the first time I feel let down, too much hype and nothing anymore creative.

The 'One more thing' doesn't work anymore, maybe Steve you should find a new gimmick.

My thoughts is that the really big products (iPhone, iPod video) are ready as prototypes but Apple can't really solve the production line issue.

Imagine that a new iPod Video or iPod Phone will sold easily by the millions. I think knowing Jobs temper he might be very frustrated at the moment and all this hype is just to keep the limelight on a breathless company until the real new announcement (probably in January 2007).

Now Microsoft (with the Zune project) and some other big guns are keeping up fast on the iPod success, so it feel like back in the middle of the eighties where the Macintosh became almost an extinct computer.

Wake up Steve!

  • Hmm Eric, it seems for me that the iTV will stream only iTunes content. Today I can stream easily any tv shows or movies to my Xbox 360, and of course playing some cool games. 300 bucks for a wireless Apple media, a bit expensive. My next move is to have a full media center and even if it's more expensive you can do a lot better than what Steve Jobs announced. OK you can also look at other companies than Microsoft if you think they are 'evil'. Check Archos for example, they have a pretty decent range of products. My point in this post is more about the fact that Apple doesn't show anymore the innovative and imaginative products they used to. So maybe I am wrong but unless they move faster they could be in trouble again, because a lot of their fan base are geeks and want to see really new stuff.

  • Wow... I think you're missing the point. This isn't about the devices, it's about the way we buy and consume media. Here's my take...

Media Center sucks. It's expensive, the UI isn't great and it's not a tiny little $300 box with the right connections.

I repeat... this is not about the devices. If Microsoft could ever understand that they wouldn't be playing catch up.

  • Microsoft will never understand. If they keep going the way they are now, ie Zune, they will continue to remain irrelavant in that market.

If a bunch of guys can hack up Xbox and create one of the best media experiences, surely Microsoft can too. Problem is, somebody up there keeps putting sticks in the wheels. Xbox 360 could've been a perfect media player device, and it isn't a brain surgery either. Make it play everything from anywhere using interface that doesn't get in the way. That's all... I don't want to connect it to a stupid media center, all I want for it to do is play files from the network... any file.

Xbox 360 is perfect for this... (well, except the noise). They didn't do it because somebody at MS said "no".

Now, explain to me, why in blue hell would somebody pay DVD price for a download that is restricted and DRMed to bits? I can just get a DVD, still have better quality AND can play it anywhere without any restrictions. If they would allow to include free downloads with a purchase of a DVD, that would be cool. This way I don't have to bother ripping a DVD. But this is too convinient.
