GeekUp - January 2007

Tonight I went to the January 2007 GeekUp event and as ever had a cracking time.

I spent some time chatting to a friend of Dan's who is doing a PHD at Manchester University on using Fortran and Neural Networks to help simulate the behavior of molecules in their surroundings (Water in this instance), very interesting and complicated work using massive sets of numbers.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed with the chemistry talk but did draw many parallels to the work I'm doing with vehicle tracking systems in so much as I'm working with huge sets of raw data and I have to manipulate that to give comprehensive reports and analysis.

There was a great session given on YUI-EXT a framework from a chap that's taken Yahoo's UI JavaScript framework and extended it to be much slicker. It's quite impressive, however it's functionality is almost all replicated in ASP.NET AJAX with the addition of the Toolkit and Extensions, so not much to offer ASP.NET developers.

Between the Molecular Checmistry and YUI-EXT I managed to catch up with Dave Verwer, Stuart Frisby, Andrew Disley, Graham Pengelly and Carl Drinkwater (amoungst others).
