Hardened PHP and, uh, adult oriented natured sites.

I've used PHP for quite a while now, but dropped it like a bag of rocks once ASP.NET came out. I still like following the project though, so when I saw an article on something called Hardened PHP I jumped right into the comments to get a "pulse" on what's happening. Anyways, one of the top rated comments was about a guy running a high volume site that deals in boobie pics, written in PHP. Followed by quite a few comments from people doing similiar work in PHP.

And this reminded me of my plan. It wasn't a great plan, but it made me laugh. What I wanted to do was create a "Adult Site Starter Kit" for April Fools day. I had it prototyped and everything. Well, work sent me to Ohio to do some training for a couple week in March, and the idea kinda went by the wayside. I still think it'd be funny, but then again I am easily amused.

In the past I've had students in ASP.NET classes that have been PHP coders and were being sent to learn ASP.NET. This doesn't provide for what I'd consider a receptive student to new ideas. Well, one guy kept bringing up the fact that Apache has a HUGE share of the market (67%) when it comes to web servers. Well, as I'm sure most of you know, IIS holds a pretty nice lead when you just look at Fortune 1000 companies. The guy pestered me about heavy handed M$ tactics and other FUD until I said, "you know what, Apache has a huge lead because the vast majority of your porn sites, empty weblogs and abandoned gaming / hardware news sites are running on shared servers running Apache where they can get $3 dollars a month hosting. There's your 60% of the internet" Not my proudest moment, but the guy did quiet down and we went on with class.

Well anyways, as stupid as my ASP.NET Adult Site Start Kit sounds, I bet it'd be pretty darn popular and do some magic for the ol' Netcraft Survey. Not that I'm suggesting that the next MSDN article I want to see up on there would be "securing your hardcore site using HTTP modules" or anything, but it make me chuckle just thinking about it.
