Gearing up for web services

We finally have a project that looks like a good candidate for web services. I have played around with some samples, but now I am looking for some meat. I have a basic understanding of what's going on but I am very concerned about security. I am aware that WSE is ready for release so I'll be looking into that.

I have looked up on the MSDN web site but to me, the coverage seems lacking. Can anyone recommend a good book that starts with but goes beyond the basics? Any good web sites? Any war stories?

Paul - I wrote many book reviews on Web Services books while Pinnacle's "Hardcore Web Services" magazine was still around. Now that they discontinued the mag, I suppose I could email you all the word .doc's if you wanted.

Thank you Jason for letting me see the reviews that you wrote. I have decided to go with the O'Reilly book because it covers alot in a good way, especially with a focus on .Net.

This does not have to be my last book on web services so the shortcoming that you mention about interop with non .Net services is important but our project will be dealing with MS products so I have wiggle room here. As a matter of fact, we found out about the short comings of using datasets to be consumed by non MS products while we were doing a proof of concept.

I will be looking for a book that covers this next. Thank you so much for your quick response.
