Refreshing the project failed.

While working on an ASP.NET project over the weekend, I suddenly got an error message when opening my solution file:

Refreshing the project failed. Unable to retrieve folder information from the server.

I was pretty irked since I was in the home stretch of a project (you know -- the last 10% of the project takes 90% of the time!). Luckily, it wasn't that big of a problem and I was able to continue developing and debugging.

Since the problem continued, I finally googled for it and found the answer: Delete the "VSWebCache" folder in your "\Documents and Settings\[Username]" directory.

Just wanted to say thank you. I found this cure for an annoying VS bug when I googled for it at 5 am.

People should say thanks now and then for what they find online I think.

Hi,

I erased the folder but the problem continues. I do not obtain more to add the project to my solution. What can i do?

# re: Refreshing the project failed.

Alberto, if you happen to check back... This also did not work for me, but I may know why. By chance are you using subversion for you web project? If so, there are two ways to get around this. (If subversion is your VCS) The simplest is to change subversion to use "_" for the prefix instead of the period. You can do that through tortiseSVN. The other is to configure your website's output to a DLL. Then to debug, you change it from a startup object to the webshare where it is located. Hope you venture back by...

Eric -- thanks for following up on this!  I'll have to remember this one since I'm using Subversion for some of my ASP.NET stuff.

Thanks Eric,  This fact erased the confusion in my mind as I was facing this problem even after deleting VsWebCache floder.

# re: Refreshing the project failed.

I tried both methods i.e clearing my vs cache and also change "." to "_" in subversion but the error was still occuring then finally I tried to load the project file through my local path i.e localhost/.../prog.proj and it gave me page not found error then finally so I checked my virtual directory and rename it as localhost/.../prog.proj in my solution file and it worked

# re: Refreshing the project failed.

Thanks Eric. I don't know if it was me who wrote that (I remember I visited this page and I am actually using subversion, but I not writing that comment. Oh Heck!, it had to be me x-D). Anyway, that seems to have fixed my problem.
