I don't like sitting back idle and watch the world go by. Almost everything I own which is electronic I make at least the attempt to modify/hack the thing to make it suit my needs. My wife has to hide her mobile phone for fear that I will get my hands on it and convert it into a remote for our lights.

With that said, I'm really starting to feel that Microsoft simply needs to give the developer a break. Sit back and relax with Visual Studio .NET 2005 for a minimum of 3 to 5 years. Get service pack 1 for 2005 nailed down and proceed towards service pack 2. They just need to let it mature and actually behave like we all know it can!

Installing Beta 1 of Service Pack 1 of Visual Studio 2005

First off, save time and the headache, do it in a virtual machine its a Beta! Heck do all your dev (if you can) in a Virtual Machine.

Be warned that it took me about 40 minutes from start to finish. For the entire installation my machine was very sluggish and the UI for the installer was pretty slow and sometimes seemed like the entire installation and machine was dead.

Steps for installation:

1. Start the installer, Go for a coffee.

2. Come back in 10-15 minutes, Hit OK and accept the EULA, go for another coffee.

3. Come back in 20-30 minutes, reboot the machine.

I created a bug/feedback item just for this, vote on it if you feel the same as I do.

https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=213096

Visual Basic 6 Pro & Vista Beta 2

I recently gave a real quick presentation to an advanced ASP.NET course at BCIT regarding COM Interop and needed to throw together a quick COM object in VB6.

After the installation was fully complete make sure you reboot your machine even though it doesnt ask you to do so. I didnt and it caused MMC to crash all the time. After the final reboot it appears to have fixed things.
