LUA on Windows XP

Microsoft released a new whitepaper from the Microsoft Solutions for Security and Compliance group (MSSC) on "Applying the Principle of Least Privilege to User Accounts on Windows XP". You can download it here or read it online here.

I was privileged to be one of several reviewers of the paper a couple of months ago. It is definitely a much needed addition to the non-Administrator/Limited User Access (LUA) literature. Please take a moment and review for an understanding how to run with least privilege in a Windows XP environment.

Too bad Microsoft developers do not care about running as LUA.

Jerry -- that is a very broad statement that really has no basis in fact. Aaron Margosis works for Microsoft, and he certainly cares about running with LUA. Michael Howard also, and a host of others. The document I point to was written by developers AT Microsoft.

Do all? No. I guarentee you, too, that not all developers do in your company or organization either. It is unfortunate, but it is the truth, and the purpose of documents like these to help educate the developers who don't.

Please don't put everyone in the same "basket". Thanks.
