Installing Visual Studio Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services on Windows XP

Yes, it is possible!

First, download Visual Studio 2005 Extensions 1.1 for WSS 3.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3e1dcccd-1cca-433a-bb4d-97b96bf7ab63&displaylang=en. You can also download version 1.2 for Visual Studio 2008 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7bf65b28-06e2-4e87-9bad-086e32185e68&displaylang=en. Now, if you try to install this on an OS other than Windows Server 2003 or 2008, it won't install. What you have to do is add a string value to the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0

"Sharepoint" (String value) ="Installed"

And that's it! Both installers will do their job without complaints.

BTW, I learned this from Martin Vollmer's Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/martinv/archive/2008/10/31/how-to-install-visual-studio-extensions-for-windows-sharepoint-services-1-2-on-vista-or-windows-xp-vsewss-exe.aspx. Thanks, Martin!

  • Hi,

I've been trying to download the VeSS v 1.2 for Visual Studio 2008, but it the Microsft download page doesn't appear. I keep getting Page Not Found errors(404 errors).

Any Idea as to what's happening. Are there other links to download these extensions?

  • Dude, this post is awesome. THANKS MAN!!! Not sure why Microsoft forces you to only install on Windows 2003/2008. More than likely they use this internally or even if they do not, they do not have to pay a license to have server 2003/2008. Thanks again man!

  • Its post is very good to use sharepoint extensions on windows xp

  • Thanks, I was just wondering who in the right mind would install VS on their web server and use it as their development tool. That was basically what this extension requires, Server 2003 with MOSS 3.0

  • Thanks a lot. This trick worked like a charm.

However, after installing the vs extensions on my XP machine, when I tried to create a workflow project in VS 2008, it gave me the error Sharepoint server is not installed.

    Could you please help?

    Thanks in advance.

    Vikram

  • Vikram,
Sorry, can't help... why don't you try installing version 1.3, which is still in beta, however?

  • You´re awesome! Thanks again.

  • bro i do not have web server extension tab in my regedit ,is there any other way out to use sharepoint services with windows xp

  • daman:
    Just create it! :-)

  • Did they "fix" this work around? I've been trying to setup my system to install and use the Sharepoint extensions but this work around doesn't seem to be fooling the installer.

  • Yes there should realize the opportunity to RSS commentary, quite simply, CMS is another on the blog.
