Problems with blogs.msdn.com (or Me against password retriever pages)

It seems I don't get very well with password retriever pages. Some time ago I blogged  about having some trouble with the password retriever page of this site, Alex Lowe help me out with that problem and pointed me to the right page.

Now I have a weird situation where I seem unable to recover my password for the MSDN blog site (blogs.msdn.com), but the strange stuff is that the problem only shows up with my personal hotmail account and not with my work account. I got no e-mail for the hotmail account.

The address of the password retriever page with the problem is: https://blogs.msdn.com/user/EmailForgottenPassword.aspx

Has anybody else experienced the same problem ? Should I contact Microsoft or Telligent for support ?

Retro Post: Engadget 1985 & Apple Videos

In a post about IBM PC's 25th anniversary they include a link to what it's probably one of the best Engadget posts ever: Engadget 1985. Enjoy.

Also in some thread discussing Vista vs Leopard (sorry, can't recall where), I found a link to a 1997 video about the Apple-Microsoft deal! How many times Steve Jobs has received a "booo" from the audience ??? Well, he did when he announced that IE was going to be the default internet browser of the MacOS. Almost 10 years later IE still generates a lot of controversy.

Check the related videos, you could find gems like the introduction of the first Mac (1984) or the first Ipod (2001).

Windows Live Writer Test

This is a test post from Windows Live Writer Beta...

A not-friendly error message that has survived many Sql Server versions

When you try to insert a string value wich has a greater length than a field supports, Sql Server (including the last version 2005) returns this unhelpful error message:

"String or binary data would be truncated"

My problem with this error message is that the field with a problem is not specificied. It seems I'm not the only one complaining about this: Steve BryantLuciano also did.

Maybe somebody from the Sql Server team could tell us how hard could be to add this simple info to the error message or somebody has some workaround to find wich field is the problem, just remember that the're scenarios where you don't control the SQL sentence that is executed like BizTalk and its updategrams.

BizTalk 2004 Problems & Wanted Features #09 : Updated SAP Adapter

Microsoft's SAP Adapter requires an old version of the .net connector v1.x.x, SAP launched a vastly improved v2 of the its .net connector more than 1 year ago. I know you don't fix what it's not broken unless you're paid by hour but at least I hope support for side-by-side deployment of the assemblies of both versions of the .net connector.

This problem also affect the SAP Adapter included with BizTalk 2006.

Some words dedicated to all the zealots (Anti-MS or Pro-MS)

Some words dedicated to all the zealots from Firefox co-founder Blake Ross:

"Everyone's talking, for example, about how IE7 is ripping off Firefox. I'm very careful to say that they're matching feature parity. They are ripping off Firefox in a sense, but the truth is that when we started Firefox, we ripped off Internet Explorer because we wanted to make sure that people who migrated from IE felt comfortable in the Firefox world.

If that means copying the interface to some degree, if that means copying some keyboard shortcuts to make sure that people can migrate and feel comfortable, that's what we'll do, and then we can innovate on top of that. I think in general, the community understands that this is kind of a collaborative process. There are always going to be people on the fringes who are just kind of zealots in either direction."

Are you tempted to disable UAC in Vista ?

Please first read what Jesper Johansson has to tell us about this. In a related post, Jeff Jones write about its ideal product requirements for UAC.

Microsoft has released the first public post-Beta2 version of Vista (Build 5456), but Paul Thurrot's review doesn't mention anything about changes or improvements of UAC but Neosmart's does: "Some of the new features include ... a completely overhauled and siginficantly less obtrusive UAP for all those that couldn’t stand the previous one."

WGA notification tool, Spyware ?

Some people thinks that Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage notification tool is Spyware because of these 2 reasons:

1) Microsoft presents the tool as an urgent security update, wich clearly it's not.

2) It sends info to Microsoft every time you boot your PC.

Guillaume Kaddouch has created a program to remove this controlversial program.
