Test Driven Development Related Podcasts and a few other comments

It's been an Test-Driven few weeks in the .NET podcasting scene. If you're into it, here are some audio shows that should help you learn a little bit about this world.

  • Hanselminutes has a couple of shows on the scene. The first one is about Test Driven Development. Scott introduces the concept in a clear and cornise way, and points to various resources on the web to go and learn more about it.
  • This week he has a show about Mock Objects. The concept of Mock Objects, which many find quite a bit "over the top" for their knowledge of unit testing, is really one of the concepts that has a horrible name for the simple idea it represents - replacing real objects and classes with fake ones so you can test more easily. I haven't listened to that show yet, but you should - Scott is an eloquent speaker.
  • .NET Rocks did a show with Jimmy Nilsson on Domain Driven Design and Development, in which he also discusses a lot the notions of Agile development and TDD. I've browsed through Jimmy's latest book and I have a comment:
  • I wish Jimmy was as eloquent and clear as he is in his book. The show audio sounds almost mind numbingly quiet and sedated. No matter how hard Carl (the host) tried, I don't think he got Jimmy into that place where he was "flowing" with his words.
  • .NET Rocks also has an older show about TDD with Jean Paul Boodhoo. It was quite hard to listen to, although Jean Paul really seems to know his stuff.

On a different note, last week, right before going on the weekend for our 5th anniversary with my wife, I Recorded a .NET Rocks show about Regular Expressions. If all goes well, it should be up on the 26th of this month, at which point you can listen to yours truly babble on in what I think will be a somewhat... ok show, nothing more. I'll leave the judging up to you, though I might not spare myself the pleasure sniping a few snide remarks about myself when I get to listen to the show.

Most interesting question I got asked on the show: "What do you say to those who find you a grumpy blogger?". Seriously, I think Carl really was aching to let that one go - me having a long history of not so cool remarks about .NET Rocks and other people affiliated with the show over the years.

In any case, I maintain that it's a good show with good content (most of the time - the Show with Mark Miller on Discoverability to me felt like a very long infomercial for Mark's company and tools), and all these guys need to keep doing is get on some new blood into their show, and not keep having the same people over and over. Otherwise I'd be tempted to call it the "frienstr" show.

Speaking of which, you now have a whole new podcast called "millahseconds" which I'm not even going to download after reading it's about page. Sorry - I've heard Mark's joked. He's a great developer and project lead, but he's not a stand-up comic.

I think that you are making a mistake about Miller. I really love the humor in both Mondays and the first show that he did. In a freaky kind of way, though. As in: "Did he -really- just said that?" About infomertials, defiantely a big deal going there for CodeRush, they seem to mention / push it every other show or so. Even avoiding the discoverability show. The two other previous shows with miller were much better, IMO. Looking forward to hearing your show :-)

Roy,

Maybe you're the grumpy blogger and I'm the crazy one but I agree with you about the DDD show. I was really looking forward to that show, but it put me to sleep. I love Jimmy's book and have emailed him about things in it, and he's a great guy. However on a podcast, he sounded like he wasn't there.

I would love to maybe say have Eric Evans on there as he's a great speaker (he came here for AgileXP Universe in Calgary, very slick) or even tap into Jim Newkirk or someone. Not saying Jimmy wasn't a good choice as a guest, but for whatever reason the show just wasn't on. Also I agree with you on the Mark Miller show. Again, I know Mark and was surprised that it kept going back to pushing the product. Mark's more about writing cool software (at least from what I know him).

Anyways, looking forward to hearing your show. I think I'm finally going to get Regular Expressions with some of your tools. It's just such a black art that I have yet to master.

Wasn't aware that I was pushing the products on DNR. I'll make sure that doesn't happen again. I recall providing examples related to recent work, and I know I was pretty excited about the implications from a general UI perspective, but to be honest I recorded that so long ago I don't recall all the details. The fact that Bill's in agreement (and Bill is someone whose opinion I totally respect), means you guys are probably right and I probably totally f'd up. Usually I think I do a pretty good job of sticking to relevant data without mentioning the products, so I appreciate feedback like this when it's different from my own thinking. ... Hey Roy -- I think you should listen to at least one episode of Millahseconds (come on man, please?). The content might just surprise you in a good way. Yeah, the about page description is a little intense, but I think the actual content may not be as sucko as you imagine. Then again, I may be wrong and it could be the worst five minutes of your life, in which case I suppose I might owe you a beer or something to make up for all the therapy needed to help recover from listening to that one episode. Let me know if I need to start saving up for that beer. :-P

@Mark: You know, I don't think you totally f'd up but I did feel a large part of the podcast was about the product. The fact that discoverability is a big part of new features in CR (and hopefully RP as Scott suggested so add my vote to that capability if possible). Maybe it's really hard for someone like yourself to not keep going back to what you know when hooked into a conversation like this. We always covet what we know. So putting a person like you in a place like, I might have done the same thing. Don't take it too hard dude. You still rock!

Sorry Roy -- just found out I won't be in Barcelona. I'll be in Vegas at DevConnections that same week. I may be able to arrange a surrogate beer buyer, but I would prefer to meet in person to relieve myself of this beer-buying debt I've accumulated.
